POSITION SUMMARY: Perform a variety of laboratory tests on materials and finished goods products to determine chemical and physical properties. Lead new product development efforts, and participate at all levels of process. Evaluate new raw materials and sources. This individual must be a self-starter and team player, and work well with little supervision. This individual must be able to work on several projects at one time, and may be asked to lead project teams and coordinate scale-up efforts.

Essential Responsibilities:

¥ Act as R&D contact for particular project category (to be assigned by the Director of R&D).

¥ Perform laboratory specification testing (physical and chemical) on national brand products and competitive products.

¥ Identify and meet with raw material suppliers and sales staff. Evaluate new and existing raw materials.

¥ Assist in improving existing products.

¥ Assist in keeping MSDS supplier files, product specifications, ingredient statements, outside testing reports, RM and PN books up-to-date and organized.

¥ Initiate formulation development on new products, and carry development to completion.

¥ Serve as the Research and Development representative on project teams.

¥ Conduct laboratory testing on formulation batches.

¥ Induce changes in composition of substances by adjusting condition such as temperature and light.

¥ Define target specifications for new products.

¥ Note deviations in performance not anticipated or indicated in test procedures.

¥ Initiate and support manufacturing and compounding in all new product introductions. Serve as technical advisor to any manufacturing or processing issues, and serve as lead contact for assisting compounding and QC as needed.

¥ Compose new product documents to be used in production.

¥ Produce samples of proposed products for sales department, in-house paneling, etc.

¥ Access, input and retrieve information from computer system.

Marginal Functions

1 Assist in designing in-house panel testing.

2 Serve as R&D representative on various company functions.

3 Coordinate outside testing for new products.

4 Proofread product labels for regulatory conformance.

5 Assist in creating “romance copy” for labels for new and existing products.

6 Analyze and review complaint samples.


Knowledge: Requires thorough knowledge of chemistry and product formulation, with a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree.

Requires extensive knowledge in product development of personal care products, with an emphasis on emulsions and surfactant chemistry.

Experience: At least four years of progressively responsible experience as a formulation chemist in a like industry with like responsibilities. Requires experience in formulation, and with emulsions and surfactant or oral care. Must have demonstrated increasing chemistry experience utilizing all laboratory equipment in a safe, efficient manner.
