Job Description: Our Hospital Surgical PA Program mimics the diversity of experience you have received in training and keeps your skills and knowledge base broad. This is a very rare trait to find in a surgical job. Diversity of Surgical specialties included on the job: General, thoracic, vascular, neurosurgery, orthopedic, bariatric, ENT, urology, GYN, and colorectal. Our Hospital Surgical PA Program is run independently and is the sole service devoted to surgical patient care. Our Hospital PA Program consists of a team of Surgical PAs with many responsibilities. On an average day, one PA is responsible for floor coverage over a 12 hour day shift, while 2 PAs are responsible for OR coverage. The floor PA participates in: AM / PM rounding on surgical patients, consults, and ICU patients either individually / with the Surgical Attendings. Review / Documentation / Interpretation / Ordering of labs and studies. Discussion and treatment plan with the Surgical Attending. Management of any / all issues involving patient management on the floors. NGT insertion / removal, chest tube removal, surgical drain / ostomy care, wound care, wound vac care, doppler experience. Post operative checks. Surgical consults and ED admission (H&Ps, admitting orders, etc.). Ambulatory surgery coverage- pre-operative evaluation, discharges, medication reconciliation etc. Discharge Paperwork, medication reconciliation, and discharge summaries. Depending on OR needs, may also be asked to help cover OR cases throughout the day. The operating PA participates in: First assisting in the majority of cases. Second assisting on orthopedic total joint patients. Training for the Da Vinci Xi (newest version) robotic cases. Pre-operative patient interviews with appropriate medical / surgical clearance. Patient preparation in the operating room (helping move, secure, and prep the patient). Review of necessary equipment needed for the surgical case at hand. Uploading images through Epic for intra-op utilization. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: B.A./B.S. and completion of 2 years accredited P.A. training program. Current NCCPA certification required. 1 year Post Graduate Surgical Residency preferred. DEA licensure and prescriptive authority. BLS certification. ACLS additionally preferred.
