Status: Full time, permanent

Location: Ohio History Center, Columbus OH

Salary: $83,000-99,000 per year

Summary:

The Director of Facilities Management leads the physical care, improvement, and major project management of the statewide historic site and museum system. This position is accountable for the strategic planning, execution, financial stewardship, and reporting of capital and operating investments across facilities and infrastructure. The Director supervises the Architectural Services and Buildings and Grounds teams and ensures strong coordination between these teams and the broader organization. The position has primary responsibility for capital project accountability, including development of capital requests, coordination of approvals through the Controlling Board and other state oversight entities, management of capital releases, and adherence to approved scopes, schedules, and budgets. The Director ensures transparency, compliance, and fiscal discipline across projects funded by multiple and varied funding sources, including state operating funds, state capital funds, restricted funds, and other public or private sources. The Director aligns facilities work with organizational goals and statewide priorities; provides leadership, training, and professional mentoring; and partners closely with executive leadership on planning, budgeting, stakeholder engagement, and long-term infrastructure strategy. The position works primarily from the Ohio History Center in Columbus, with frequent statewide travel.

Essential Functions:

Builds, leads, and guides a high-performing Facilities Management leadership team with clear accountability for outcomes, timelines, and budgets.

Oversees the development, submission, and defense of capital requests, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, audience impact, and state requirements.

Maintains primary accountability for capital project approvals, including coordination with state agencies, preparation for Controlling Board review, and compliance with all reporting and documentation requirements.

Manages capital releases and cash flow across projects, ensuring spending aligns with approved authorizations, schedules, and funding restrictions.

Develops and implements a proactive, organization-wide preventative and cyclical maintenance strategy to protect long-term capital investments.

Leads comprehensive budget planning and oversight for the Division, including operating and capital budgets with multiple, varied funding sources.

Ensures rigorous budget monitoring, forecasting, and variance management, proactively addressing risks related to scope changes, cost escalation, or funding timing.

Maintains high standards of project management discipline, including scope control, schedule adherence, vendor oversight, and financial accountability across all projects.

Ensures that all teams maintain, protect, and preserve historic resources in alignment with current best practices, the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), and the Secretary of the Interior's Standards.

Works with division directors to establish clear project governance, decision-making authority, and accountability structures for capital and facilities work.

Collaborates with the Chief Officers and other division directors on long-range capital planning, prioritization of investments, and integration of facilities needs into organizational strategy.

Works closely with division directors to develop capital budget priorities that balance preservation needs, operational sustainability, and audience impact.

Ensures maintenance, grounds, engineering, and landscaping needs are addressed through planned, cost-effective strategies that support both operating efficiency and capital preservation.

Develops strategies for the effective use of staff, consultants, and contractors to steward public and private resources responsibly.

Leads and serves on cross-organizational teams, providing expertise in facilities planning, capital project execution, and budget accountability.

Builds a culture of collaboration, transparency, and fiscal stewardship that reflects the organization's Mission, Vision, and Core Values.

Provides timely feedback, coaching, and professional development for managers, serving as a strategic thought partner and accountability leader

Required Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a relevant field PLUS over ten years relevant working experience.

A minimum of five years of progressive management of full-time staff.

Preferred: Experience managing managers and with the capital budget process

Desired Skills & Experience:

Demonstrated leadership in developing and implementing short- and long-range plans, consistent with an institution's strategic vision

Demonstrated ability to oversee multiple programs and departments simultaneously, evaluate situations and identify solutions quickly.

Demonstrated ability to manage projects, including planning, setting timelines, and completing deliverables utilizing project management processes

Demonstrated ability to supervise managers and staff with an eye towards coaching and development, goal setting, and metrics analysis

Experience setting, tracking, and analyzing metrics for complex programs with an eye toward continuous improvement and sustainability

Demonstrated ability to communicate with staff and the public, both orally and in writing, particularly the ability to work diplomatically and effectively with colleagues and the ability to build and maintain partnerships and relationships.

Excellent presentation skills

Experience with creating and managing complex budgets from diverse funding streams

Proficiency in various office software suites and virtual platforms, including but not limited to Microsoft 365

Effective organizational skills, including attention to detail, prioritizing and managing multiple tasks for yourself and your team, and being accountable to the organization for said tasks.

Able to initiate work and delegate to managers and staff (either direct reports, volunteers, interns/apprentices, project staff, or contractors/vendors)

Intuitive and proactive in all levels of stakeholder identification, relationship building and stewardship that support organizational and divisional goals and objectives.

Willingness to investigate new ideas and implement changes to improve the outcomes of the Division.

Able to make practical and prudent business decisions and connections for profitability (may be earned revenue, grants, state funds, etc.)
