Job Description
Position Purpose:
The HVAC Service Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems for residential and commercial customers. This role ensures HVAC systems operate safely and efficiently, delivering reliable service and technical support while maintaining a positive customer experience.
Typical Job Duties:
Install, maintain, and repair furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, boilers, and ventilation systems.
Perform routine diagnostic checks, preventive maintenance, and emergency repairs.
Test HVAC systems for efficiency, refrigerant levels, and operational safety.
Respond to service calls, including after-hours on-call assignments, for repairs, maintenance, or system malfunctions.
Educate customers on system operation, recommended maintenance, and energy efficiency practices.
Complete service reports, job documentation, and customer records accurately and promptly.
Maintain service vehicle inventory and equipment in clean and safe operating condition.
Collaborate with dispatch, office staff, and other technicians to coordinate service schedules and resolve service issues.
Participate in regular safety training and technical skills development programs.
Follow all company safety procedures and industry regulations, including use of appropriate PPE.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand, walk, climb, crouch, and lift up to 75 pounds regularly. Work in confined spaces, on ladders, rooftops, or outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Working Conditions:
Primarily field-based at residential and commercial customer sites. Exposure to extreme temperatures, confined spaces, and HVAC system components. On-call or overtime work may be required during peak seasons or emergency situations.
Equipment and Machines Used:
Service vehicles, hand tools, power tools, HVAC diagnostic tools, refrigerant recovery units, leak detectors, and mobile devices.
Reporting Relationships:
The HVAC Service Technician reports directly to the Service Manager. This position does not typically supervise other staff.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. HVAC certification or technical school completion preferred.
Related Experience: Minimum of 2 years of HVAC installation, service, or repair experience. EPA Refrigerant Handling Certification preferred.
Job Knowledge/Skills Required:
In-depth knowledge of HVAC systems, controls, and safety regulations.
Strong mechanical, diagnostic, and troubleshooting skills.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
Effective customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
Strong organizational and scheduling abilities.
Ability to manage a daily service schedule independently.
Basic computer and mobile device skills for service reporting and communication.
Commitment to safety protocols, including use of PPE and adherence to HVAC regulations.
Flexibility for on-call, weekend, and holiday work as required.
