What you’ll do:

The Ohio Attorney General's Office is currently seeking an experienced individual for a civilian Computer Forensic Specialist vacancy in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) Section in the Cyber Crimes Unit. This position will report to the London, OH office. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation, known as BCI, houses the state’s official crime lab and identification services serving Ohio’s criminal justice community. BCI also provides expert criminal investigative services to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies upon request.

Staff at BCI provide the highest level of investigative, scientific, and technological services to process evidence, bring criminals to justice, and help local law enforcement solve cases. Experienced special agents, forensic scientists, and other law enforcement experts staff BCI’s three main divisions\: 1) Identifications 2) Investigations and 3) Laboratory.

The duties for this in-office position include, but are not limited to, the following:

· Independently develops and utilizes specialized tools (e.g., portable forensic workstations; first responder imaging and preview utilities; evidence acquisition devices) and procedures to collect, preserve and forensically examine digital evidence of criminal offenses in accordance with established and validated forensic principles (e.g., prepares duplicate images; recovers deleted and/or corrupted files; recovers password protected and/or encrypted files; recovers hidden data; traces internet and network communications).

· Understands and follows policies and procedures relating to seizure and examination of evidence from digital media; reviews and follows policy and procedure guidelines to ensure support for the forensic analysis of emerging technology; makes procedural recommendations to and reviews procedural recommendations received from other law enforcement jurisdictions statewide.

· Researches tools and provides training to law enforcement agencies statewide as needed.

· Assists investigators in preparation for seizure of computer evidence related to criminal activity.

· May accompany and assist sworn investigators in field investigations.

· Researches and recommends forensic analysis strategies.

· Prepares reports of findings for presentation in criminal case proceedings and testifies in judicial or quasi-judicial proceedings as required.

· Confers with prosecuting attorneys.

· Receives, maintains and releases evidence in accordance with agency handling procedures and assures security of seized evidence.

· Tests computer program according to procedural specifications.

· Designs, configures and maintains complex computer hardware for use during case work and program development.

· Acquires and analyzes evidence.

· Resolves complex technical issues involving equipment connectivity and communications between suspect system and forensic equipment.

· Identifies, researches and evaluates computer equipment and software.

· Drafts and follows up on purchase order requests.

· Collects information from investigators and/or prosecutors.

· Assists federal, state and local law enforcement agencies in matters involving computer related crime and digital forensics.

· Attends seminars and classes for training in specialized forensic software and hardware applications, forensic analysis techniques and other specialized areas.

· Participates in professional networking forums.

· Executes verification tests of forensic software and methods to independently validate functionality.

· Other related duties as assigned.

· Completion of undergraduate core program in digital forensics, information sciences, information systems, computer science or related technology discipline, which includes coursework specific to computer forensic science.

· -Or 24 mos. exp. in conducting forensic examinations on digital media or directly related specialty area (e.g., cell phone forensics, incident response).

· -Or Industry accepted certification directly related to computer forensic science (e.g., CFCE, CCME GCFE, GCFA, GASF, SCERS, EnCE) or equivalent.
