Job Title: Mechanical Apprentice

Job Description

This Mechanical Apprentice position supports installation teams on a major hospital expansion project. You assist with material handling, basic assembly, and general site support while gaining hands-on experience in HVAC and sheet metal installation in an active commercial construction environment.

Responsibilities

Support installation teams as an extra set of hands on the job site.

Move, stage, and organize materials and equipment for HVAC and ductwork installation.

Assist with material assembly, including basic sheet metal and ductwork components under supervision.

Act as a spotter for scissor lift and other equipment operations to help maintain a safe work area.

Perform site clean-up, including debris removal and maintaining orderly work areas.

Follow directions from lead installers and forepersons to complete assigned tasks efficiently.

Use hand tools such as impact drills, wrenches, pliers, channel locks, vice grips, sockets, and screwdrivers to support installation work.

Read and interpret basic construction and installation information from blueprints or drawings as directed.

Adhere to all safety protocols, including proper use of PPE and compliance with OSHA requirements.

Operate a scissor lift when certified and authorized, following all safety guidelines.

Essential Skills

At least 2+ years of construction experience.

Mechanical aptitude and a strong interest in learning HVAC and sheet metal installation.

Experience or exposure to sheet metal, HVAC, duct work, and duct installation in a construction setting.

Ability to assist with HVAC installation tasks and follow technical direction.

Familiarity with reading or working from blueprints in a construction environment.

Current OSHA 10 certification or higher, or the ability to obtain it before starting.

Current scissor lift certification, or the ability to obtain it before starting.

Ownership and proficient use of hand tools including impact drill, wrenches, pliers, channel locks, vice grips, 9/16" sockets with impact adapter, and screwdrivers.

Ability to consistently wear and work in required PPE, including a type 2 hard hat with chin strap, high-visibility vest, safety glasses, cut level 5 gloves, and steel-toed boots.

Reliability to work early shifts and maintain consistent attendance Monday through Friday, with potential Saturday work.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

OSHA 30 certification is a plus.

Experience in commercial construction, industrial construction, or large-scale projects is beneficial.

Experience in stainless steel welding or general welding is a strong advantage.

Comfort working at heights with appropriate fall protection equipment.

Ownership of a full body harness and retractable lanyard is preferred.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced construction environment.

Strong work ethic, willingness to take direction, and desire to grow skills in the mechanical and HVAC trades.

Work Environment

You work on a major children’s hospital expansion project in a commercial construction setting. Typical hours are Monday through Thursday from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with Saturday shifts anticipated in late spring and early summer as the project progresses. The environment is active and fast-paced, with coordination among multiple trades. You regularly use hand tools and may operate scissor lifts when certified. Proper personal protective equipment is mandatory at all times, including a type 2 hard hat with chin strap, high-visibility vest, safety glasses, cut level 5 gloves, and steel-toed boots.Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Columbus, OH.Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $23.00/hr.
