Who We Are

National Wildfire Tracking (NWTT) is a non-profit, non-partisan public safety information and situational awareness organization focused on wildfires, severe weather, and disaster events across the United States. Our mission is to deliver timely, verified, and actionable information that helps communities, responders, and decision-makers understand developing incidents in real time. We are expanding our technology team and looking for Volunteer Developers to help build and improve our digital platforms nationwide.

What You Will Do as a Volunteer Developer:

Develop and maintain features on NWTT’s wildfire tracking website and internal tools

Build and improve interactive mapping systems (fire perimeters, weather overlays, WUI layers, satellite views, distance tools, etc.)

Integrate external data sources (incident feeds, weather APIs, wildfire datasets)

Assist with automation systems and alert integrations

Support development of premium tools such as saved locations, advanced map features, and live feed integrations

Help improve performance, reliability, and scalability during high-traffic breaking incidents

Collaborate with other developers and newsroom staff to deploy new features

What You Bring:

Interest in public safety technology, disaster response, mapping, or emergency management

Experience with web development (JavaScript, React, or similar frameworks preferred)

Familiarity with APIs and data integration (JSON, REST, etc.)

Experience with mapping tools (Google Maps API, Leaflet, GIS platforms) is a plus

Cloud or infrastructure experience (AWS preferred) is a plus

Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Ability to work in a remote setting and collaborate with a distributed national team

Minimum Commitment:

1 hour/week is encouraged, but no less than 2 hours/month is required to stay active.

Hours are trackable for service hours documentation.

Resume/experience screen by NWTT leadership

Phone and/or Google Meet interview with team leadership
