Position Overview
The Structural Steel Superintendent is responsible for overseeing all field operations related to structural steel erection on large-scale commercial and industrial projects. This role ensures work is executed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with project schedules, quality standards, and contract requirements.
Responsibilities
Lead and manage day-to-day structural steel erection activities from mobilization through completion
Coordinate sequencing, logistics, and installation of complex steel systems, including columns, beams, joists, decking, and miscellaneous metals
Work closely with project management, engineers, and trade partners to maintain schedule and resolve field issues
Supervise subcontractors and field crews, ensuring productivity, safety compliance, and quality workmanship
Review drawings, specifications, and erection plans to identify conflicts and proactively address constructability concerns
Plan and manage crane operations, deliveries, laydown areas, and material flow
Enforce site safety programs and ensure compliance with OSHA and company safety standards
Conduct daily site walks, progress tracking, and reporting
Coordinate inspections and ensure work meets project and code requirements
Mentor and develop field personnel while fostering a strong team environment
Qualifications
8+ years of experience overseeing structural steel erection on large, complex construction projects
Proven ability to manage multiple crews, tight schedules, and high-volume steel operations
Strong knowledge of steel erection methods, sequencing, rigging, and safety practices
Experience coordinating work in fast-paced, high-demand environments
Ability to read and interpret structural drawings and specifications
Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
Preferred Experience
Projects involving multi-story structures, significant tonnage, and accelerated schedules
Experience working in highly coordinated environments with multiple trades on site simultaneously
Work Environment
Field-based role requiring daily presence on active construction sites
Ability to work extended hours as required by project demands
