The Apprentice role allows candidates to complete a surgical technologist training program while learning on-the-job to develop industry-specific skills. As a member of the surgical team, the Surgical Technologist ensures the operative procedure goes smoothly, efficiently, and complies with all safety processes and policies. Apprentices enrolled in the program will be integrated into the OR team; upon successful completion of the training program the apprentice may be hired as a Surgical Technologist. This position will function under the supervision of an instructor, preceptor, and Registered Nurse and reports to Surgical Operations management. The work experience is related to the Apprentice's specific role and will support Intermountain Health's mission, vision, and values. Intermountain Health has partnered with SLCC's Surgical Technology program to create an apprenticeship program that tightens connections between training and the workplace.
Intermountain Health will sponsor up to 3 apprentices for the fall 2026 class.
The program will require full-time attendance as a student at SLCC's Surgical Technology Program in West Jordan, Utah and requires routine check-ins with a supervisor from Intermountain Health.
During the school year, apprentices will work at our hospital's surgical services areas for short shifts (before classes) to observe and learn key on-the-job skills that support surgery.
Student completes all SLCC's surgical technology program requirements (Steps to Apply # 1- 4 below)
You will not be considered for sponsorship until you have been accepted into the SLCC Surgical Technology program (see steps 1-4 above).

Caregivers accepted into this program are required to sign an agreement prior to beginning the program to work for Intermountain for at least one year (2080 hours) after they complete the program.
Students are responsible for SLCC enrollment fees, all prerequisite courses, books, uniforms, and supplies. What Intermountain Health offers

Paid tuition for the Surgical Technology program classes at SLCC. Paid certification test.

Please note caregivers who are accepted into the cohort won't be able to utilize tuition reimbursement for their textbooks, or miscellaneous fees.
Please note: Intermountain provides up to $5,250 of educational assistance each year for benefits eligible caregivers. Any amount over that which is provided on behalf of the caregiver will be taxed to the caregiver per IRS guidelines. Job Essentials
Attends Intermountain Health and Apprenticeship Program orientations, and completes all required paperwork and documentation before starting apprenticeship
Attends scheduled departmental training, completes required training, and testing in a timely manner
Completes all mandatory training as assigned
Maintains good performance and attendance standing with Intermountain Health and apprenticeship program expectations
Ensures the operating room and surgical items meet disinfection and sterilization criteria
Maintains sterile field and safe environment
Under the direction of a preceptor, the apprentice prepares the operating room and instruments for surgical procedures
Assists the surgical team during the procedure, within the scope of practice
After procedure, cleans room and prepares for next procedure in compliance with established protocol
Demonstrates ability to consistently maintain a good rapport and a positive demeanor with colleagues and customers Minimum Qualifications
Candidate must be accepted to either the Intermountain/SLCC apprenticeship program or the Intermountain Health Surgical Technology apprenticeship program and fulfill all pre-requisites specific to the program and Intermountain Health hiring requirements
Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers
Candidates must speak, read, and write in English
Intermountain Health caregivers must be in good performance standing upon acceptance to the apprenticeship program
Legally authorized to work in the United States
Candidate must have High School Diploma or GED Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills.
Demonstrates organizational skills, detail oriented, and the ability to prioritize tasks.
Demonstrates initiative and willingness to take on additional assignments when needed.

Candidate must apply and meet all SLCC College requirements to be accepted into their Employer sponsored surgical technology program (Steps to Apply # 1- 4 below).
The deadline to submit the Surgical Technology Employer Sponsored Program application to SLCC and meet all program requirements is January 15 to May 15, 2026. (Priority review for applicants).
If positions haven't been filled from the May 15th deadline, a second deadline is June 1, 2026 - August 1, 2026.
Steps to Apply
All candidates must apply and be accepted to the SLCC Surgical Technology Program (Employer Sponsored Cohort) for the Fall 2025 to be eligible for sponsorship from Intermountain Health. Please complete the following steps:
