Position Description

The Program Support Driver plays a critical role in ensuring clients and program operations move safely and efficiently across Harlem United’s service sites. This position combines professional driving, client support, and light administrative/program assistance to help Harlem United deliver high quality, mission driven services across housing, health, and community programs.

The ideal candidate is reliable, compassionate, detail oriented, and comfortable working with diverse communities—including individuals experiencing homelessness, chronic illness, substance use, or behavioral health challenges.

Essential Job Functions

Transportation & Safety (Primary Function)

Safely transport clients to and from appointments, program sites, and community resources.

Operate agency vehicles, including vans and sedans, in compliance with all NYC and Harlem United safety policies.

Conduct daily vehicle inspections and report maintenance needs promptly.

Maintain accurate mileage logs, trip sheets, and transportation records.

Ensure vehicles remain clean and ready for service.

Program & Client Support

Assist program staff with client check ins, appointment coordination, and escorting clients as needed.

Support mobile or field based services (e.g., outreach, harm reduction, or mobile health) by helping set up equipment, supplies, and materials.

Provide basic customer service and de escalation support when working with clients in transit.

Assist with distributing supplies (food, hygiene kits, harm reduction materials, etc.) during community outreach.

Administrative & Operational Support

Support office tasks such as filing, scanning, data entry, or appointment reminders when not driving.

Assist with inventory, supply restocking, and program logistics.

Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding scheduling, route changes, and client needs.

Always uphold confidentiality and HIPAA standards.

Special Skills and Knowledge

Required Qualifications

Valid NYS Driver’s License with a clean driving record.

Minimum 1–2 years of professional driving experience (nonprofit, healthcare, or social services preferred).

Ability to work compassionately with individuals impacted by HIV/AIDS, homelessness, substance use, and mental health conditions.

Strong communication and customer service skills.

Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. and assist clients with mobility needs.

Basic computer skills (email, scheduling, simple data entry).

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a community based organization, FQHC, shelter, or harm reduction setting.

Familiarity with Harlem United’s mission and service populations.

Bilingual (English/Spanish or French.

Experience supporting mobile health or outreach teams.

Work Environment

Mix of driving, field based work, and office support.

Exposure to diverse community settings, including shelters, encampments, and medical facilities.

Requires flexibility, patience, and strong interpersonal skills.
