Travel & Per Diem Information
This role supports shipyard operations in Norfolk, VA and is offered as a project-based contract position. Candidates may be recruited nationally. Per diem and travel assistance are available for qualified candidates working outside their home market. This opportunity does not require permanent relocation and offers the potential for project extensions.
We are seeking experienced Marine Structural Welders to support major shipyards across the Hampton Roads area. This position is ideal for welders who take pride in their craft and want stable, long-term work with steady hours. Candidates with DBIDS, TWIC, and current welding certifications will receive priority consideration.
Key Responsibilities
Perform structural welding using SMAW/Stick and FCAW/Flux Core processes
Fabricate, fit, measure, and weld structural components on naval and commercial vessels
Read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, and ship schematics
Work in shipboard environments including confined spaces, heights, and dry docks
Follow safety procedures and quality standards required by shipyard regulations
Collaborate with other trades to achieve production goals and deadlines
Maintain cleanliness of work area and care for assigned tools and equipment
Required Skills & Experience
Minimum 3 years of structural welding experience in a shipyard or heavy industrial environment
Strong understanding of welding procedures and structural fitting
Ability to pass a hands-on welding test (FCAW/SMAW – 3G/4G/6G preferred)
Knowledge of shipyard safety practices and standards
Ability to work overtime, weekends, and various shifts when required
Reliable transportation and consistent attendance
Priority Credentials (Highly Preferred)
Candidates possessing the following will be moved to the front of the hiring process:
DBIDS (Defense Biometric Identification System) Access
TWIC Card (Transportation Worker Identification Credential)
Current Welding Certifications (FCAW, SMAW, Flux Core – 3G/4G/6G)
Ability to obtain or maintain base access
Physical Requirements
Ability to climb ladders, bend, kneel, work overhead, and work in tight spaces
Lift up to 50 lbs as needed
Work in hot, cold, or noisy shipyard environments
