Mid To Senior Cobol Developer / Solutions Architect

Credence has an immediate need for a Mid to Senior COBOL Developer / Solutions Architect to support our AI/ML team. This role is critical to bridging legacy COBOL systems and modern cloud native architectures. The candidate will act as a technical lead and translator, working across legacy codebases, modernization tools, and modern engineering teams to ensure accurate business logic extraction, successful code conversion, and validated operational outcomes.
Responsibilities
Legacy System Analysis & Business Logic Extraction
Analyze COBOL, JCL, and DB2 components of legacy systems to understand existing business processes and data flows
Support reverse engineering efforts to extract and validate business rules, interfaces, and non-functional requirements
Collaborate with Government SMEs and sustainers to ensure functional accuracy and mission alignment
Modernization & Solution Architecture
Guide modernization efforts using AWS Transform, Reimagine, Kiro, and/or Blu Age, as appropriate
Support forward engineering of modernized services (Java, C#, or Node.js) based on extracted business logic
Contribute to defining cloud native, microservices-based architectures aligned with DoW standards
Integration, Testing & Validation
Support generation and execution of automated test cases to validate converted code against legacy outputs
Participate in User Acceptance Testing (UAT)
Documentation & Knowledge Transfer
Produce clear technical documentation describing legacy behavior and modernized solutions
Support knowledge transfer to Government personnel to reduce long-term reliance on scarce COBOL skills
Requirements
5-10+ years of hands-on experience with COBOL in large, mission critical systems
Strong experience with mainframe or AS/400 environments, including JCL and DB2
Demonstrated ability to understand and document complex business logic from legacy systems
Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with mixed legacy and modern engineering teams
Desired / Preferred Qualifications
Experience with legacy system modernization or refactoring projects
Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and modern application architectures
Exposure to Java, C#, or Node.js in modernization or re-engineering efforts
Understanding of logistics, supply chain, or sustainment systems
Experience working alongside automated code transformation tools (e.g., AWS Transform, Reimagine, and/or Blu Age)
Experience working in DoW or Federal enterprise environments
Prior involvement with DoW systems
Must be a US Citizen and Clearable
Active Clearance is preferred
