JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Cafeteria Manager ï Child Nutrition
Department: Child Nutrition Program
Reports To: Child Nutrition Supervisor / Director of School Nutrition
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Terms of Employment: Ten-month employment. Salary to be determined by the school board.
Contract / Schedule: School-year position; workdays and hours determined by school schedule. Additional days required for training, planning, program setup, and end-of-year cleanup.
Position Purpose: The Cafeteria Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operation of the Prince Edward County Public Schools Child Nutrition Program at the assigned school. This position ensures the efficient production and service of nutritious meals in compliance with USDA, Virginia Department of Education, and Prince Edward County Public Schools regulations while maintaining high standards for food safety, customer service, fiscal accountability, and staff supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: to include the following and other duties may be assigned.
Program & Kitchen Operations
Plan, organize, and direct daily food service operations at the assigned school site
Ensure meals meet USDA meal pattern requirements and follow standardized recipes
Oversee scratch cooking, production schedules, and proper food preparation techniques
Monitor food quality, presentation, portion control, and student satisfaction
Ensure compliance with HACCP, food safety, sanitation, and health department regulations
Staff Supervision & Leadership
Supervise, train, and support cafeteria staff to ensure efficient operations
Assign daily work schedules and responsibilities
Foster teamwork, professionalism, and a positive work environment
Support staff training requirements, including USDA Professional Standards
Participate in employee evaluations in accordance with PECPS procedures
Meal Service & Customer Focus
Oversee meal service to ensure timely, orderly, and student-friendly operations
Address service issues and resolve concerns in a professional manner
Ensure appropriate accommodations for students with special dietary needs
Promote a welcoming cafeteria environment
Cashiering & Financial Accountability
Oversee point-of-sale (POS) operations and ensure accurate meal counts
Ensure proper handling of cash, deposits, and documentation
Monitor inventory, ordering, receiving, and storage of food and supplies
Maintain records required for reimbursement, audits, and state or federal reviews
Compliance & Reporting
Maintain required documentation for USDA, VDOE, and PECPS compliance
Support administrative reviews, audits, and site inspections
Implement corrective actions as directed
Ensure civil rights requirements are followed during meal service
Program Support & Continuous Improvement
Collaborate with the Child Nutrition Office on menus, procurement, and program initiatives
Support program changes, including non-congregate meal service, emergency feeding, and special events
Participate in planning meetings, trainings, and professional development
Identify opportunities for improvement in efficiency, food quality, and customer service
Perform other duties as assigned
Required Training
USDA Professional Standards training (annual required hours for managers)
Food safety and sanitation certification (as required)
HACCP and food safety management training
Civil Rights training
Point-of-sale and financial accountability training
Any additional training required by PECPS, VDOE, or USDA
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of USDA Child Nutrition Program regulations and meal patterns
Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and HACCP principles
Ability to supervise, train, and motivate staff
Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work in a fast-paced environment
Ability to maintain accurate records and reports
Strong customer service and communication skills
Ability to adapt to program changes and operational needs
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required
Previous school food service experience required; supervisory experience preferred
Ability to meet training and certification requirements
Physical Demands
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time
Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and lift frequently
Ability to lift and carry up to 40ï 50 pounds, with or without assistance
Ability to work in a kitchen environment with exposure to heat, cold, and noise
Work Environment
School kitchen and cafeteria environment
Exposure to commercial kitchen equipment, cleaning chemicals, and temperature variations
Evaluation
Performance of the position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Prince Edward County School Board's policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
