Responsible for assessing the physical and psychosocial status of clients presenting for high-risk pregnancy care by means of interview, health history, physical examination and diagnostic tests. Interprets data and develops and implements therapeutic plans in collaboration with the OBG Consultant

The Labour Delivery Room Physician Assistant delivers comprehensive health care to the high risk obstetrical patient focusing on health assessment, education, and disease prevention as well as managing chronic disease health conditions.

LDR Physician Assistants shall perform gynecological exams for patients. When it comes to surgical procedures, however, LDR PAs are only able to assist a Consultant, not perform the surgery themselves.

LDR Physician Assistants provide prenatal and postnatal care to patients. This includes providing a physical examination, obtaining family medical history information and answering any questions patients may have before or throughout their pregnancy.

LDR Physician Assistants may also perform basic medical tasks, such as recording patients’ vital signs and collecting urine and blood samples. Additionally, they prescribe medicine, coordinate referrals to specialists and work with physicians to treat patients whose condition or care requires expertise that is outside of the scope of their training. Depending on the size and structure of the practice they work in, some LDR Physician Assistants supervise other employees, such as medical assistants and technicians.

Major Duties and Responsibilities :

-Function within the scope of practice of the physician assistant role.

-Functions as client advocate.

-Provide care that is nonjudgmental and sensitive to client needs.

-Collaborate with other health care providers to achieve optimal health care outcome.

-Identifies non-reproductive health problems and provides management or referral. Provide patient education and counseling in response to client needs.

-Assist with development and revision of LDR protocols/guidelines.

-Assist with Performance Improvement activities, adheres to requirements mandated by CAH Standards and other regulatory bodies.

-Attains and maintains national certification through approved continuing education. Attend staff and divisional meetings as appropriate. Assists with research studies arranged with the LDR/OBG department.

Duties on Inpatient Service :

-Assist with care coordination as applicable by writing daily notes including plan of care, including weekends.

-Initial evaluation of consulting - records H&P and plan of care in collaboration with LDR/OBG Consultant.

-Assures updated notes, delivery notes of transfer patients to referring consultants. Notify referring consultant if antepartum is hospitalized greater than one week or when discharged.

-Assists with growth U/S, amniocentesis for possible infection or lung immaturity, and AFI's and BPP's on antepartum patients, as required.

-Takes initial patient histories and performs physical examinations.

-Initiate documents and communicates the plan of care and follows-up to ensure complete screening and preparation of patients.

-Perform daily patient rounds.

-Write orders for medications, laboratory work and diagnostic tests. -Interpret laboratory and test results.

-Confer with attending physicians, residents, nursing staff and/or other care providers to ensure optimum quality of patient care.

-Upon discharge notes discharge summaries, prescriptions and any referrals on patient charts.

-Inform patients of the necessary post-discharge care instructions.

On Outpatient Service :

-Sees return high-risk patients.

-Evaluates consults and develops plan of care with LDR/OBG Consultant.

-Reads NST's, AFI's and BPP's and charges appropriately.

-Returns/answers patient calls.

-Act as the LDR representative at the multidisciplinary conferences.

-Assists with procedures as needed; amniocentesis, PUBs, etc.

-Demonstrate decision-making and problem-solving skills.

-Demonstrate communication that supports a culture of service excellence.


-Master of Science - Nursing [Obstetrics and Gynaecology].

-Knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology, and the Clinical Aspects of Patient Care at a level normally acquired through completion of Post Graduate Degree.

-Registration from Karnataka Nursing Council


-Minimum 2 years in relevant area [Labour Delivery Room/OBG]
