POSITION: Special Education Life Skills (Self-Contained) Teacher

REPORTS TO: Special Education Manager

POSITION TYPE: 10-month

START DATE: 26-27 School Year

COMPENSATION: Starting at $64,000 annually

26-27 STIPEND: Up to $5,000 (Certification Required)

SIGNING BONUS: Up to $4,000

In a TEACHER INCENTIVE ALOTTMENT ELIGIBLE* COURSE: TIA teachers can earn up to $102,800.

Through our Teacher Pathway, we reward our highest performing teachers with yearly stipends, differentiated development and coaching, and unique opportunities to flex their influence.

YES Prep is also a TEA Teacher Incentive Allotment approved district. Teachers in eligible courses can earn up to an additional $32,000 a year if designated under TIA based on their performance on our Instructional Excellence Rubric and student growth for 5 years if they remain in the classroom.

This means that based on our teacher salary scale and TIA designation payouts, a TIA designated teacher could earn the following:

1 year of experience: $91,800

5 years of experience: $96,800

10 years of experience: $99,800

15 years of experience: $102,800

We serve the students of Houston, Texas, the 4th largest city across the United States. There are over 20 public-school districts and other great public charter school options within Houston's city limits serving our increasing population.

THE ROLE

When you join the YES Prep team, you will play an integral role in guiding Life Skills teachers toward success with their students and student achievement through classroom culture and management, instructional planning, and delivery. Some of the exciting work and responsibilities will include:

Develop and execute the vision for Alternate Instruction at YES Prep to lead toward jaw-dropping student achievement results, while maximizing inclusive practices.

Managing YSTEP units, including procuring resources, managing budget, creation of Community-Based Instruction, and refinement and execution of SpEd Program Vision.

Supporting with the management of SHINE units, including lesson planning support, creation of CBI

Collaborate with Assessment to ensure YSTEP/SHINE teachers execute TELPAS and STAAR ALT Assessments

Observing classroom instruction of teachers and providing developmentally appropriate coaching via written and oral feedback (as identified by the Special Education Instructional Excellence Rubric/ Teaching Excellence Rubric)

Assisting teachers in collecting and analyzing student performance data to drive instructional decisions

Providing lesson planning support to YSTEP/SHINE teachers

Arranging opportunities for novice teachers to co-observe master teachers

Planning and delivering focused lessons in novice teachers' classrooms to model effective practices

Communicating regularly and engaging in collaboration with campus SpEd Manager, Director of Academics/Assistant Principals and content leaders to align feedback and support

Facilitating professional learning sessions throughout the school year

Managing a team of YSTEP and SHINE Special Education Curriculum Writers and PD Facilitators

Additional duties as assigned

MUST HAVES

Experience with Life Skills programming or similar settings

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year educational institution

At least 3 years of exemplary Special Education teaching experience

Outstanding record of student achievement results

Hold a valid Texas Educator Special Education Certification

Hold a valid Texas Educator Certification in Core Content

Belief in and commitment to the mission and core value of YES Prep Public Schools

Openness to giving and receiving frequent feedback

Demonstrated ability to work on a team

Ability to juggle multiple tasks and initiatives at once

Ability to maintain emotional control under stress

NICE TO HAVES

Bilingual (Spanish)

Experience with teacher supervision (as a department head, mentor, or coach)

Strong knowledge of contributing factors that lead to an effective Life Skills teacher

Experience planning and delivering professional development to adults

Experience teaching Life Skills at both the elementary and secondary levels

Compensation - This position is an exempt, salaried position; salary offers commensurate with experience.
