The Department of Anthropology and Sociology at Amherst College invites applications for a full-time one-year visiting appointment at the rank of assistant professor. The area of specialization is cultural anthropology. The appointment will begin July 1, 2026. with the possibility of renewal for a second year, contingent upon the needs of the department and positive reviews of teaching and other responsibilities.

A Ph.D. in hand by August 2026 and prior teaching experience are required. The successful candidate will teach two courses per semester at the undergraduate level in the candidate’s areas of expertise. Ethnographic and topical areas of specialization should complement those of other members of the department. While the department has particular interest in scholars working on Latin America and/or Africa in areas such as law, religion, indigeneity, and media and technology, strong candidates working in other regions or on related themes will also be given full consideration. The visiting assistant professor will also supervise senior honors theses, attend department meetings, and otherwise participate in department activities.

The expected salary range for this job opportunity is $70,000 to $100,000. The salary offered will vary based on a number of factors, including but not limited to relevant education, training, and experience, tenure status, and other nondiscriminatory business considerations.
