Quality Engineer (Conformal Coating)

Job Description

The Conformal Coating Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring that all conformal coating processes, materials, inspections, and documentation comply with internal procedures, customer requirements, and applicable industry standards. This role provides technical oversight of coating operations, drives continuous improvements, supports audits and acts as the quality authority for conformal coating related issues across manufacturing.

This role performs detailed, incoming, in-process, and final inspections, supports process controls, leads defects analysis, and interfaces with cross-functional teams to drive continuous improvements in quality reliability.

Key Responsibilities

Serves as the quality subject matter expert for all conformal coating processes (Urethane, acrylic, silicone, epoxy, parylene, UV-curable, etc.).

Perform visual microscope inspections of uncoated and conformal coated PCBAs in accordance with IPC-610, IPC-CC-830, IPC-TPM-650, and customer specifications.

Verify coating coverage, thickness, edge definition, and uniformity using UV light and measurement tools where applicable.

Identify and document coating defects, Bubbles, pinholes, fisheyes, bridging, pooling, wicking, de-wetting, orange peel, FOD, contamination.

Ensure coating application, cure masking, and rework processes meet IPC, customer, and regulatory requirements.

Review and approve conformal coating rework instructions, process travelers, control plans, and inspection criteria.

Provide technical guidance on rework and repair of coated assemblies.

Ensure compliance with AS9100, ISO 13485, ISO 9001, ITAR, NADCAP and customer quality requirements.

Support internal, customer, and third-party audits (NADCAP, customer source inspections, and regulatory audits)

Maintain coating process documentation, validation records, and material certifications.

Lead root cause analysis for coating related defects, using problem solving tools (8D, 5-why, Fishbone).

Drive corrective and preventative actions (CAPA) to prevent recurrence.

Analyze defect trends and implement process improvements to improve yield and reliability.

Support new product introduction (NPI) and process qualification activities.

Train inspectors, technicians, and operators on conformal coating quality requirements and defect recognition.

Experience: 3+ years of quality engineering experience in electronics manufacturing, with direct experience in conformal coating process.

· Experience with automated or selective conformal coating systems.
