JOB SUMMARY: To provide accurate and timely communication with non-English speaking families and ensure compliance with federal and state laws and Office for Civil Rights while promoting alignment and consistency across all schools and departments by recruiting and retaining quality interpreters and translators.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following tasks describe the basic functions of the job and represent the type of work performed. They do not constitute an exhaustive list of the duties and responsibilities performed on the job. The following frequencies and percentage of time spent are approximations only and are subject to flexibility dependent on organizational needs.

Interpret consecutively or simultaneously for parents during, but not limited, to parent/teacher conferences, IEP meetings, expulsion hearings and student disciplinary hearings, admissions process, and at school and district meetings as needed. [Daily, 30%]

Provide information about school and community resources & services to families. [Daily, 25%]

Facilitate communication and understanding between families, school, and community while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism. [Daily, 15%]

Act as a cultural link between parents, students, school, staff, and community and work with staff to facilitate social and cultural adjustment in school. [Daily, 15%]

Collaborate and coordinate resources with school parent liaisons, other parent partnership groups in the schools, district, and in the community to assist [language] families and students. [Daily, 10%]

Translate documents for distribution including handbooks; guides; legal notices; forms; policies and regulations; discipline and internet use documents; relevant applications, etc. Utilize a variety of tools including software, dictionaries, publications, Web-based research, etc. [Daily, 5%]

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The minimum amounts of formal education, professional work experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities that must be met for a candidate to be considered for a position

Interpreter Certification or Bachelor’s degree in Arabic or related field preferred. Cultural mediation training and translation/interpretation training coursework completed within twelve months after hire

Bilingual and bi-literate in English and Arabic as determined by required district assessment

Skilled in interpersonal relations

Ability to work with others in a team setting

Advanced knowledge of Arabic educational terms, phrases and acronyms

Intermediate knowledge of inter-cultural communication including sociology-linguistic diversity and variance

Operating knowledge of and experience with word processing and interpreting system

Knowledge of translation software and features for Microsoft Word is required within six months after hire

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Any job-related formal education, professional work experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, certifications, licenses, and other criteria that are inessential and in addition to the minimum qualifications, certifications, and licenses.
