Position Description
Columbus Academy seeks a full-time Middle School Learning Specialist to support middle school students with responsibilities to begin in August 2026.
The individual selected for this position will be expected to carry out the following responsibilities:
Work in collaboration with other members of the Child Study Team and the middle school faculty to identify student learning needs and develop appropriate interventions and support plans
Collaborate with classroom teachers to provide the best practices in reaching the variety of students in each classroom
Provide direct instruction to students identified with significant learning needs (learning disabilities, ADHD, executive function, etc.) one on one and, if necessary, in regular classroom settings
Provide support and resources for families and students to develop an understanding of individual learning challenges and how these learning challenges can best be addressed
Provide advocacy and accommodations for students with documented learning disabilities
Write, update and implement individual student accommodation plans
Use available technology to enhance the students' learning experiences
Maintain effective record-keeping procedures (student narratives, comments, written goals)
Communicate with classroom teachers regarding student progress
Provide periodic updates to parents about student progress, via both written reports and in-person conferences
Work collaboratively and build relationships with students and faculty
Attend and participate in weekly faculty meetings
Demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional growth
Assume a share of supervisory responsibilities expected of all middle school faculty members
Hold students accountable for the school's standards of behavior
Work with others in the school community to support each student's emotional well-being

Preferred candidates will possess the following qualifications:
Certification as an intervention specialist (mild to moderate) with bachelor's degree required and master's degree preferred
At least three years of teaching experience as a learning specialist (direct instruction)
Knowledge of varied pedagogy and trends in instruction and curriculum design at the middle school level
Teaching experience at the middle school level with a specific passion for teaching middle school children (preferred)
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to work independently and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously
Strong organizational skills Physical Conditions
Candidates must be able to manage the following conditions:
Classroom environment
Mobility around school buildings and on different floors (handicap accessible)
Repetitive motion (use of a keyboard)
Periodic need to move light furniture, hang visuals in classroom, carry objects (no more than 40 pounds), etc.
