Under the direction of the Recreation Program Superintendent, the Recreation Coordinator plans, develops, implements, promotes and evaluates City sponsored recreation activities, supports recreation facility operations and manages the Jack Florance outdoor swimming pool. This position supervises various permanent part-time and seasonal staff and is subject to emergency callouts and must be able to work overtime including nights and weekends and stand-by as required.

Essential Functions:For purposes of 42 USC 12101

Responsible for budgeting, planning, organizing, marketing, and evaluating City athletic programs and providers to meet community needs; may include conducting programs; training, scheduling, and evaluating staff, sports officials, volunteers, and coaches in a variety of sport or activity programs; maintaining accurate team standings and records; assuring expenditures are within budget; distributing and ordering of equipment and safety supplies; and working in cooperation with department staff on facility scheduling, rentals; communicates and promotes programming to organizations (YMCA, DYAA, youth sports leagues, city schools and independent contractors) and participants through written and verbal means to include the use of established social media platforms.

Manages and supervises assigned employees (e.g., schedules and assigns tasks; evaluates performance; recommends corrective action/discipline).

Assists the Recreation Superintendent in helping to organize and supervise the operations of pool facilities and major areas of aquatic programs, including program development and deployment, program support, maintaining certification records, scheduling staff, and assisting in ensuring pool safety and proper maintenance.

Monitors registration of programs utilizing recreation software system; has authority to manage waitlists, refunds, and program transfers.

Assists the Recreation Superintendent with the recruitment and hiring of part-time, seasonal, and intermittent staff, as well as volunteers. Plans, organizes, assigns, and reviews the work of assigned staff. Assists in setting performance standards and evaluating performance.

Assists in the development and delivery of program-specific and safety training for staff to assure the safety of staff in program delivery.

Enforces program, park and facility rules and regulations and complies with safety standards associated with risk management. Acts as a point of contact for all emergency action plans and situations. Participates in the development of and changes to program, park and facility policies, rules, and regulations.

Provides excellent customer service by ensuring prompt and timely communication with both internal and external customers and responding to concerns/complaints; exercises independent judgement in addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Familiarity of pool operations to include pump room operations, on-deck operations, programming, staffing, and scheduling.

Familiarity of recreation programming/event planning.

Familiarity of general safety protocols for recreation and aquatic facility operations.

First-aid and CPR techniques.

Skill in conflict resolution, problem-solving and creative thinking.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and tactfully.

Prepare accurate, complex, routine, and non-routine reports utilizing a variety of programs/software and maintain accurate and organized records.

Familiarity of marketing and social media platforms to educate and promote recreation programs.

Develop and maintain effective relationships with the general public and city staff.

Collects payments, makes change, and reconciles receipts.

Ability to work independently, work under pressure, prioritize work and to set and achieve goals.

Understands general concepts of budgeting (expenditures and revenues) and evaluating programming within these parameters; assists with budget development and is responsible for all budget expenditures.

Demonstrates an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the community.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

Physical Requirements

The primary duties of this position are performed in a public park, building, and pool environment and may include working in adverse weather conditions and exposure to hazards involving the use of equipment, working near moving parts, and exposure to hazardous chemicals and materials.

Sufficient clarity of hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, communicate with other employees and the public and discern emergency or alarm warning systems.

Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and work orders, technical manuals, and related diagrams; and to move over rough and unfamiliar terrain.

Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate a variety of equipment.

Sufficient strength to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds for varying distances.

Sufficient body flexibility, mobility, stamina, and balance to perform maintenance and repair operations that require bending, stooping, kneeling, stretching, and other physical exertions to swim and perform lifesaving pool extractions, first aid and CPR.

Sufficient ability to endure prolonged exposure to varying temperatures; i.e. prolonged sun and heat exposure during summer months.

Equipment Operated

Office: Computer, copier, phone, and other standard/modern office equipment; computer software (e.g., Microsoft Office, registration, and other applicable computer software).

Pool: Performs inspection and minor maintenance involving pump room equipment operations and on-deck operations. Refers repairs to the Recreation Superintendent and/or Facilities Superintendent.

Training, Experience, and Qualifications

Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in sports management, recreation, physical education or related field preferred and at least two (2) years of experience in recreation preferred or any combination of education, training and experience which will indicate the possession of the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Experience supervising part-time or seasonal staff.

Food Safety Certification by the Ohio Department of Health required within six (6) months of employment.

Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO), Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Certified Parks & Recreation Professional (CPRP) certifications preferred.

CPR (including AED certification), First Aid, Water Safety Instruction (WSI), and Lifeguard Instruction/Instructor Training highly desired.
