Primary duties include assisting the GWWW Operations Department with a variety of tasks to maintain and improve the Gas/Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection systems serving the City of Decatur.

Primary scope of work includes providing assistance and support in all phases of civil engineering functions including system planning/design/layout, modeling and coordination, metering, construction, flow and pressure testing, compliance, and regulatory functions for natural gas, water and wastewater utility systems.

Assists GWWW Operations and GIS department with field survey work and ArcGIS mapping improvements/updates.

Collaborate with operations/engineering staff to provide administrative, analytical, and technical support for daily operations and customer service correspondence.

Prepare and maintain files, records, drawings, reports, maps, charts, and other data related to engineering and construction projects.

Create and update engineering drawings, models, and layouts using CAD software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D or similar.

Assist in coordination with contractors, engineering firms, and developers for capital projects and new developments.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Enrollment in a Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or similar Engineering undergraduate program from an accredited school with a minimum of 2 years of completed degree related coursework.

Ability to read, interpret and comprehend documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, drawings and procedure manuals.

Ability to analyze and prepare engineering and technical reports and business correspondence

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft Outlook, Word & Excel) as required to perform job tasks. This includes using software applications for email, word processing, database tracking and spreadsheet applications. General knowledge and use of CAD and GIS Software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS) is preferred.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as friction loss, flow rates, grades, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume.

Ability to apply concepts of complex fluid mechanics, hydraulics, and other engineering/mathematical computations.

Ability to collect data, apply basic engineering principles and exercise good judgment to solve a variety of utility problems. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Available to work scheduled times; good organizational and time management skills; ability to handle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously; maintain professional business appearance and image; subject to random drug testing and driver’s license checks. Field work required.
