Field Service Engineer
SGM Magnetics - Lifting Division
Position Summary
The Field Service Engineer is responsible for hands-on commissioning, inspecting, troubleshooting, upgrading, and supporting SGM lifting magnet systems installed on overhead and outdoor cranes. This role requires frequent travel to customer facilities, primarily within heavy industrial and steel mill environments, and close coordination with the Engineering and After-Sales Departments in Italy.
The position demands strong electrical and controls expertise, the ability to work independently in autonomous field conditions, and the professionalism required to represent SGM directly to customers.
Key Responsibilities
Travel up to 60% of the time to customer facilities across the United States and Canada to:
Commission new lifting magnet systems
Perform inspections and preventative maintenance
Execute system retrofits and upgrades
Diagnose and resolve electrical, mechanical, and control-related issues
Commission, test, and inspect high-voltage and low-voltage electrical systems installed on overhead cranes and outdoor cranes.
Troubleshoot and modify PLC-based magnet control systems, including:
Hardware and software diagnostics
Do program updates and ladder logic verification
Understand and troubleshoot complete magnetic lifting devices, including:
PLC and electromechanical controllers
Industrial communication networks (Ethernet, DeviceNet, Profibus, Profinet)
AC/DC drives
Battery backup systems
HMI systems and wireless control network components
Perform programming and troubleshooting using platforms such as:
RSLogix 5000
Studio 5000
FactoryTalk View
TIA Portal
Other industrial control software tools
Deliver customer training on system operation, safety procedures, troubleshooting, and best practices.
Interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation to support commissioning and service activities.
Generate detailed service, commissioning, and inspection reports, including:
Electrical measurements and troubleshooting
Root cause analysis
Corrective actions
Photographic documentation
Technical recommendations
Maintain organized documentation of manuals, reports, drawings, and project-related files.
Coordinate technical clarifications and troubleshooting efforts with the Engineering Department in Italy.
Ensure strict compliance with safety standards, including work in steel mill environments, use of aerial lifts, and adherence to site-specific safety procedures.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Comfortable working at heights and driving aerial lifts
Stand and/or walk during shifts lasting up to 10 hours
Work flexible schedules including weekends, nights, and holidays as required
Operate in environments with varying noise levels
Lift up to 50 pounds
Frequently push, pull, squat, bend, reach, and climb stairs when applicable
Work in heavy industrial and steel mill environments
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Mechatronics
Willingness to relocate to the United States
Strong knowledge of electrical systems (high and low voltage)
Knowledge working with PLC and PC-based control systems
Knowledge in industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, Profibus, Profinet)
Knowledge working with HMI systems and/or other control network components
Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and technical documentation
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently in an autonomous environment
Willingness to travel up to 60%
Compensation and Benefits
Starting Salary: $55,000 USD per year
6-Month Performance Review: Increase to $60,000 USD per year
Housing: SGM will provide housing for two months during apartment search
