Infectious Disease Physicians (0068-0006)

Treat patients with infectious and communicable diseases caused by viruses, bacteria or parasites.

Work with infectious diseases of all types and in all organs, from the common cold and flu to HIV, respiratory infections, parasitic infections, and some allergies. May use preventive medicine; in other

cases, antibiotics may be prescribed. Recommend laboratory tests or X-rays on patients to find the cause of the infection or to determine the seriousness of the infection. May recommend blood tests or physical exams on patients who are travelling to other countries where they might be exposed to infectious diseases. On call with other physicians at job sites.

Requires M.D., or foreign equivalent; completion of residency in Internal Medicine; completion of fellowship in Infectious Diseases; and eligibility for medical licensure in Tennessee.
