About the Project

The Next Gen Risk Ecosystem (NGRE) initiative is focused on advancing PayPal's risk systems to strengthen platform trust, drive sustainable growth, and maintain a competitive edge through modernization and innovation. Key Challenges Addressed:

Increasing fraud complexity and pressure

Fragmented and outdated defense systems

Legacy infrastructure limiting agility and scalability

The mission is to modernize risk defenses using AI/ML-driven automation, modular platforms, and unified data and decision layers, enabling seamless risk intelligence across Venmo, Xoom, and Braintree ecosystems.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Java Developer to join the Partnership Risk Engineering team. This role is ideal for a hands-on engineer passionate about scalable system design, cloud-native development, and intelligent automation.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, and deploy scalable Java-based microservices and RESTful APIs using Spring and Spring Boot

Collaborate with Data Scientists, Product Managers, and Architects to deliver end-to-end risk management solutions

Implement and optimize CI/CD pipelines using Harness or Jenkins

Deploy and support applications across GCP (AWS experience a plus)

Improve backend performance, scalability, and resilience in distributed cloud environments

Integrate with modern data platforms and decision services supporting real-time fraud detection

Utilize AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, Cursor) to accelerate development and testing

Troubleshoot complex system issues and implement root-cause fixes

Support platform modernization using Docker, Kubernetes, and NoSQL technologies where applicable

Qualifications

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field

3+ years of professional enterprise software development experience

Technical Skills

Strong proficiency in Java, J2EE, Spring Framework, and Spring Boot

Solid understanding of RESTful API design

Experience with relational databases (Oracle, MySQL); familiarity with NoSQL

Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines (Harness or Jenkins)

Cloud deployment experience (GCP preferred, AWS a plus)

Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, and distributed systems architecture

Familiarity with AI-powered development tools

Typical Day in the Role

Develop, enhance, and maintain multiple Java-based microservices applications across Xoom and PayPal platforms

Support a portfolio of 40+ applications, ensuring performance, reliability, and stability

Lead re-architecture initiatives to modernize legacy systems into cloud-native, modular microservices

Perform ongoing enhancements, bug fixes, and feature development

Collaborate with platform and infrastructure teams to align with NGRE standards

Participate in code reviews, testing, and deployment to ensure high-quality, maintainable code
