Description:
The SST Literacy specialist will provide and support technical assistance, literacy networking opportunities and literacy information and resources to teachers, education leaders and community school members for the purpose of positively impacting the literacy outcomes of children in grades K through 12. In addition, the literacy specialist will provide supports beyond grade 5 as related to Ohio's Dyslexia Support Laws. This work will be integrated into the application of leadership structures and the Ohio Improvement Process as implemented by districts with the support of the State Support Teams.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. A master's degree in reading or literacy education, or master's degree in a related area with either reading or literacy endorsements on state license
2. Expertise in how to improve student learning through the implementation of high-quality evidenced-based reading/literacy strategies
3. Completion of a professional development program accredited by the International Dyslexia Association (accreditation or accreditation plus level)
4. Three to five years of successful classroom teaching that includes reading/literacy instruction in grades preschool-grades 12
5. Experience as a provider of professional development and technical assistance specific to evidence-based language and literacy development
6. Evidence of previous development of professional development materials specific to language and literacy development
7. Experience with coaching and consulting educators or leaders.
8. Experience designing and implementing district-wide or school-wide multi-tiered system of supports.
9. Knowledge of how to analyze and use student data and adult implementation data.
10. Experience working with administrators.
11. Experience facilitating or participating in plan-do-study-act cycles (i.e., collaborative problem-solving model, etc.).
12. Valid Driver's license
13. Complies with drug free workplace rules and board policies
14. Documentation of clear criminal record
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Experience with culturally responsive practices
2. Experience facilitating and interpreting screening measures for identifying students at-risk for reading failure
3. Experience providing and coaching structured literacy instruction
4. Experience designing and implementing district-wide or school-wide multi-tiered system of supports
5. Experience providing instruction to individuals with dyslexia or individuals with risk factors for dyslexia preferred
6. Experience coaching and providing consultation to adult learners
7. Experience providing instruction in special education, with a master's degree in special education and/or an intervention specialist license.
8. Administrative license
9. At least 5 years successful classroom teaching, working with school personnel to improve literacy instruction
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
1. Regional Literacy Professional Development and Technical Assistance
2. Supporting Implementation of Ohio's Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement
a. State Literacy Network
• Engage in collaborative models for identifying needs, problem-solving and removing barriers to local implementation of literacy practices
• Engage in inquiry cycles, including testing, data collection and analysis to inform development and implementation of statewide resources
• Support the development and implementation of sustainable statewide systems for literacy through collaborative network participation and leadership
b. Regional Support Teams for Literacy
• Attend monthly professional learning and networking sessions alongside regional support team for literacy members
• Lead discussions and collaboration to support building collective knowledge and capacity across the region to support literacy
• Build relationships and collaborative partnerships around literacy to members of the regional support team for literacy
• Work collaboratively with educational service centers and Department staff providing literacy supports to districts receiving literacy supports through their service delivery agreement with the SST to ensure support is aligned to Ohio's Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement
c. Ohio's Coaching Model*
• Work collaboratively with Department staff and regional service providers providing literacy coaching supports to districts receiving literacy supports through their service delivery agreement with the SST
• Support integration of literacy coaching initiatives and participants into regional literacy networking opportunities
3. Participate in Ohio's State Literacy Network and Regional Professional Learning Series for Literacy.
The Regional Literacy Specialist will:
a. Attend all scheduled meetings and trainings organized by the Department;
b. Be an active member and participant of the State Literacy Network. This includes attending monthly meetings and collaborating between meetings with literacy colleagues throughout the state; and
c. Participate in the monthly regional professional learning series and engage with SST/ESC team members to build the capacity of the regional network.
4. Participate in professional learning to deepen content knowledge and further strengthen skills.
Regional Literacy Specialist are expected to complete the foundational, trainings in the first two years of onboarding. If a specialist has already completed a training, they will not repeat this training unless required by the SST Director, Department staff or requested by the specialist.
5. Provide regional literacy support.
6. Communicate with SST Director and SST Colleagues.
The Regional Literacy Specialist will:
a. Regularly communicate district and regional work with SST Director, SST Colleagues and ODE Urban Support Team.
b. Attend monthly regional literacy specialist calls with the Department team to:
• discuss literacy efforts across the 11 districts;
• identify needs;
• share problem of practice protocol; and
• document literacy progress in the district.

Salary:
Commensurate with experience and in accordance with specified salary schedule
