We need a motivated team player to join the Division of Materials and Waste Management (DMWM) at our Central Office in Columbus, Ohio.

This environmental specialist will be a multidisciplinary position handling remediation programs for problem waste sites across Ohio such as abandoned landfills, open dumping sites, and illegal scrap tire disposal.
The ideal candidate will bring their eye for detail to review applications for remediation projects and monitor contractors' performance at approved sites to ensure they are operating correctly and are in compliance with state and federal rules.
You'll review work contracts, handle change orders and resolve issues with project scope and progress to keep things on track. Where enforcement is necessary, you'll assist in coordinating actions with district office staff, case preparation, drafting, tracking, and case management.
We'll need your skills for organization and numbers to track project finances, process contractor invoices and keep financial records. You'll also review and evaluate financial assurance documents such as insurance policies, letters of credit, trust agreements, bonds and environmental tests to ensure compliance.
You'll develop and provide DMWM program-related training and assist agency staff, industry consultants, health departments, and the public with technical questions.
Here's the rundown of the key duties:
Coordinate and monitor contractor performance at scrap tire, open dumping, and waste debris remediation projects.
Review applications for remediation programs.
Assist in coordinating enforcement actions when necessary.
Review, track, and maintain project data and financial assurance documents.

Qualifications
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The position will require statewide travel and unusual working hours. In addition to office work, it will require working outside in varying weather conditions and walking long distances in difficult terrain
12 mos. exp. as Environmental Specialist 1, 85861.
OR 4 yrs. trg. or 4 yrs. exp. in position involving engineering or chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, geology or hydrogeology &/or other comparable physical or health science field &/or mathematics which included responsibility for conducting compliance monitoring surveys &/or inspections/reviews or investigations, or review of permit applications relative to oil & gas well operations or injection, annular disposal & saltwater injection wells & enhanced recovery projects or coal mining, or solid/hazardous waste sites or industrial & municipal wastewater dischargers, or collecting, compiling & preparing various environmental assessments, evaluations, reports & related documents. Training & experience must be commensurate with duties to be assigned.
OR baccalaureate degree in engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, earth science &/or urban & regional planning, geology or other comparable physical or health science fields, with training to be commensurate with duties to be assigned.

NOTE: The employee must obtain registration as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist-in-Training or Registered Environmental Health Specialist in accordance with Section 3776.11 of the Ohio Revised Code from the Ohio Department of Health within six months of the initial date of employment. Failure to attain registration may result in dismissal. During any time within the six-month period and prior to obtaining Registered Environmental Health Specialist-in-Training or Registered Environmental Health Specialist registration, the employee shall not engage in the practice of environmental health as defined by section 3776.01(E) of the Ohio Revised Code unless accompanied by a Registered Environmental Health Specialist.
