Our client is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to serve as an Owner’s Engineer supporting mission-critical data center developments in Upstate New York. This role represents the owner’s technical interests across design, evaluation, construction, tenant deployment, and commissioning. The position requires strong mechanical systems expertise, particularly in advanced cooling strategies and large-scale infrastructure environments.
This is a senior technical oversight role focused on protecting performance, reliability, scalability, and long-term operational flexibility.
Key Responsibilities
Design Oversight and Technical Scope
Develop procurement packages, technical scopes, and performance criteria for mechanical systems.
Ensure designs align with owner standards and tenant deployment requirements.
Interpret tenant cooling architectures including direct liquid cooling (DLC), rear door heat exchangers (RDHx), and hybrid air/liquid strategies and translate them into facility-side mechanical requirements.
Validate engineering assumptions, redundancy strategies (N, N+1, 2N), resiliency targets, and maintainability.
Engineering Evaluation and Optimization
Review consultant and vendor design approaches for chilled water systems, cooling plants, pumps, heat rejection systems, and liquid cooling interfaces.
Perform cost, value, and reliability tradeoff analysis to balance capital cost with lifecycle performance.
Recommend alternatives to improve efficiency, scalability, operability, and constructability.
Prevent over-design while protecting long-term operational flexibility and expansion capability.
Vendor and Submittal Review
Evaluate vendor qualifications and technical compliance with project standards and Basis of Design (BoD).
Review submittals, revisions, and deviations against approved design documents.
Identify integration risks across controls, hydraulics, system sequencing, and failure modes.
Coordinate technical clarifications between contractors, Engineer of Record (EOR), commissioning teams, and operations.
Construction and Tenant Fit-Out Coordination
Support deployment planning and mechanical integration during tenant installations.
Interface with electrical and controls disciplines to ensure cross-system compatibility.
Resolve field conditions, sequencing conflicts, and commissioning readiness issues.
Translate tenant requirements into actionable construction direction.
Commissioning and Turnover Support
Assist in development of commissioning plans and functional test procedures.
Verify sequences of operation and system interactions.
Participate in integrated systems testing (IST) and functional performance testing.
Support documentation development and operational readiness prior to turnover.
Required Qualifications
Strong knowledge of chilled water plants, cooling towers, pumping systems, CRAH/CRAC units, and liquid cooling strategies.
Experience reviewing engineering designs, submittals, and contractor deliverables.
Understanding of redundancy topologies and maintainability strategies in data center environments.
Ability to identify integration risks and coordinate across mechanical, electrical, and controls disciplines.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to represent the owner in technical discussions.
