DEFINITION
Do you have a passion for our town's world-class trails? Looking for a seasonal job that allows you to be outside? If you want to contribute to the growth of the Eastern Sierra's recreation community, join our Trail Crew! The Town of Mammoth Lakes is looking for motivated individuals to lead and direct the trail maintenance crew in the construction, maintenance, and repair in the Mammoth Lakes Trail System. This position will work approximately 40 hours per week for the summer months. Performs signage maintenance, general maintenance, record keeping & upward reporting of completed work. Performs trail work in Spring, Summer and/or Fall conditions including limbing and bucking of trees & installation of signage, kiosks, or markers.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Outdoor Recreation Manager and direct supervision from the Trails Program Manager. May be designated to supervise Temporary Maintenance Workers I (Trail Crew) as needed.
Examples of Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Perform maintenance and construction on the Mammoth Lakes Trail System.
Lead and provide direction to volunteers, fire crews, and small trail crews.
Perform general grounds cleaning.
Perform signage maintenance and installation.
Drive vehicles used to transport materials, tools, and equipment as required.
Monitor activities on trails and provide public information.
Perform upward reporting on work completed.
Perform duties in a responsible manner independent of direct supervision.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Standard practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in trail construction and maintenance work.
Occupational hazard and safety precautions.
Safe work practices.
Chainsaw experience a plus.
Ability to use hand and power tools.Ability to:
Work with others as part of a team.
Use a variety of maintenance equipment and materials.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Be present and available for work.Experience and Training:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education:
Specialized training/experience in trail maintenance is preferred.
Experience:
Temporary Trail Crew Leader: while snow-cat and grooming experience is a plus, this is an entry level position.
Licenses:
Possession of, or ability to obtain within the state required timeframe of ten (10) days of established residency, a valid State of California Class C Driver's License with an acceptable driving record. Must pass an appropriate background check prior to the hire date.

Compensation shown on this posting is the entire pay scale, in compliance with the California Equal Pay Act. However, please note that, "An employee will be appointed at the minimum rate for the class...Advancements in salary shall be based on a merit system...Step A (the minimum rate) will be the starting hiring rate...Employees shall be eligible for advancement to steps within the salary range upon satisfactory completion of an annual performance evaluation."
