Job Title: School Resource Officer

Job Purpose: To patrol school buildings to ensure a safe and secure building environment, as well as the personal safety of students, staff, and visitors.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of best practices in building security and safety.

Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations and codes related to building safety and security, including OSHA, and Electronic Surveillance laws.

Knowledge of security and alarm systems, electronic surveillance, and related safety and security devices.

Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with principal, security guards and others.

Ability to describe orally or in writing security problems as needed.

Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.

Ability to maintain a professional, calm and authoritative manner when challenged by students.

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of the Police Officer Basic Course (reserve basic is not acceptable);

Completion of the MDE School Resource Officer Basic Course within two (2) years of appointment (See MS Code 37-7-321);

Completion of MDE Legal & Procedure Course #23-0313122 within two (2) years of appointment;

Completion of Basic Active hooter Training Level 1 within two (2) years of appointment;

Completion of National Basic School Resource Officer Course within two (2) years of appointment;

Completion of FEMA Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response ICS-100 within two (2) years of appointment;

Completion of FEMA Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response ICS-200 within two (2) years of appointment;

Completion of FEMA An Introduction to the National Incident Management System IS-700 within two (2) years of appointment;

Completion of FEMA National Response Framework, An Introduction IS-800 within two (2) years of appointment;

Forty (40) hours per year of MDE sanctioned in-service training;

Must be at least 24 years of age;

Must have at least three years of full time commissioned law enforcement service / experience prior to assignment;

High School Diploma or completion of sufficient education to successfully perform the duties of the position;

Successful experience in security or law enforcement;

Experience working with adolescents preferred.

Supervises: N/A

Duties & Responsibilities:

Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance.

Provides for the safety and security of students, staff, visitors and School District property in accordance with School District policies to provide an educational climate which is conducive to learning.

Responsible for lecturing and training students on safety protocols, risk management, and emergency procedures.

Develops and delivers comprehensive safety training programs, ensuring students are well informed and prepared to handle various safety scenarios.

Collaborates with faculty and staff to integrate safety education into the curriculum and foster a culture of safety within the institution.

Conducts ongoing security patrols of the building.

Enforces Board policies, as well as federal, state and local ordinances regarding smoking, parking, loitering, trespassing, theft, vandalism, property damage, alcohol, drug abuse, and other school rules and regulations.

Reports concerns and incidents which may require corrective action to Building Security Supervisor and Principal.

Encourages appropriate student conduct with regard to school rules and regulations and regulations.

Assists visitors to the school in receiving proper direction, assists in maintaining log of all visitors, and prevents unauthorized persons from entering the building.

Monitors exits and prevents unauthorized exits of the building by students.

Checks student passes when classes are in session.

Escorts students to and from designated areas as needed.

Assists in school investigations and school related violations as needed.

Physically separates students involved in altercations and maintains crowd control as needed in accordance with established guidelines regarding the use of force.

Monitors grounds in morning to prevent loitering and improper parking of vehicles.

Perform other job related tasks as assigned by the immediate supervisor or superintendent.
