Position Description
Certified Crane Operators operate and maintain heavy equipment, including large friction and hydraulic cranes, used in the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, airports, buildings, and other structures.
Key Duties
Operate large cranes, friction and hydraulic, safely.
Load chart test on various crane configurations.
Understand and execute ANSI B30.5, OSHA, federal, state, and local requirements regarding crane set-up, securing the load, controlling the load, and hand signals.
Inspect, clean, lubricate, and maintain equipment.
Set up and operate the computer in correct configuration and work within limitations.
Qualified Rigging Level 1 and Qualified Signal Person Level 1.
Eliminate possible safety hazards.
Coordinate daily activities with supervisors.
Other duties as needed and assigned by management.
Benefits / Compensation
Base rates and benefit packages follow collective bargaining agreements with Operating Engineers Local 324 and include competitive wages, employer sponsored medical insurance, as well as a pension and defined contribution plan. Base rates start at $37.97 per hour depending on level of experience. Total benefit packages can exceed $69 per hour.
Position Requirements
General.

Education and Experience.
This position is not typically an entry-level job, as it requires experience as a crane operator, certified by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO). A journeyman's designation as an operating engineer with experience on roads, highways, and bridges is preferred.
A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is also preferred. You must be able to understand work directions and communicate effectively with job-site supervisors and fellow employees.
Physical Demands.
The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by Heavy Equipment Operators to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Constant physical effort, including standing and sitting, can be required during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day. Employee must be able to stand and sit for extended periods of time, and to stoop, bend, and crouch as required to perform Key Duties.
Must be able to climb on and off heavy equipment safely.
Work is performed near and around live traffic and requires constant awareness of your surroundings.
Ability to lift and carry, on a frequent basis, at least 50-90 pounds personally, and up to 150 pounds with assistance.
Maintain constant alertness to the multiple activities on the construction site, including other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.
Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
Capable of safely and productively operating a man-lift.
Ability to maintain balance while working on watercraft or other surfaces.
Sufficient skill and visual acuity, under varying degrees of light, darkness, and weather conditions, to provide direction and flagging for operators of cranes with rated capacities of up to 300 tons.
Work Environment.
Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, commonly found in road construction.
Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found in road construction or near equipment, such as, grease, diesel fuel, gasoline, and asphalt.
