Department: Laboratory

Shifts: Rotating day/evening shifts-typically no nights

Status: Casual

Receive and organize patient specimens, enter results into the computer, communicate findings, handle phones and paperwork, assist with training, and perform general office tasks.

Responsibilities:

+ Demonstrate a service-oriented approach by showing courtesy, respect, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude in all work situations. Take initiative and assist with department tasks as needed.

+ Monitor pneumatic tube and courier deliveries to ensure timely processing of specimens.

+ Investigate and resolve specimen issues or requesting errors; request assistance when needed. Complete quality forms for unacceptable specimens or other problems.

+ Process specimens by centrifugation, label aliquot tubes, transfer as required by policy, and store samples at appropriate temperatures.

+ Record specimen receive times in the computer system accurately.

+ Respond to telephone inquiries regarding proper specimen collection, results, and normal ranges.

+ Follow all health and safety regulations for handling biohazardous samples and sharps to prevent exposure.

+ Verify patient specimens (blood, urine, and other body fluids) against requisitions or labels, ensuring information matches paperwork. Request additional information in the Laboratory Information System as needed.

+ Prepare, package, and send specimens to outside locations when required.

+ Receive, sort, and prioritize all specimens according to laboratory policies. Share specimens as necessary and notify the supervisor of issues or requests that need clarification.

+ Disinfect work areas during and after shifts as needed.

+ Participate in the orientation and training of new laboratory specimen processors.

+ Perform routine technical and related clerical duties as directed

+ High school diploma or equivalent required.

+ 3-6 months of experience in a clinical lab, physician's office, or medical environment preferred; familiarity with medical terminology and lab information systems a plus.

+ 3-6 months of experience in a service role, such as call center, customer service, or product fulfillment, preferred.

+ Strong oral and written communication skills; able to interact effectively with patients, customers, and co-workers of all ages.Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:UPMC is an Equal Opportunity Employer/Disability/Veteran
