Nuview Union School District POSITION DEFINITION: Under general supervision, to plan and conduct a bus driver training program; to instruct and evaluate bus drivers to ensure that a high standard of performance is achieved and maintained; assist in building routes, assigning buses and drivers; to operate a school bus or transportation vehicle over designated routes within an established time schedule; to transport students to and from school and on special event trips; to perform daily inspections of a bus or transportation equipment; and to do other related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Plan, develop, and implement a training program for bus drivers to ensure that safe practices are achieved and adhered to in accordance with District and State regulations and policies.

* Conduct training in safe driving and safe working methods and procedures.

* Counsel and assist new drivers.

* Provide technical information and observations regarding the performance of bus drivers.

* May make recommendations regarding the assignment of drivers.

* Compile, maintain, and monitor a variety of records related to the training, certification, and maintenance of certification of bus drivers.

* Assist in evaluating transportation routes, and report unsafe road conditions.

* Drive a school bus or transportation vehicle over assigned routes in accordance with an established time schedule.

* Transport children to and from school.

* Load and unload students safely at designated stops and on study trips.

* Plan, organize, and implement student safety and pupil transportation vehicle evacuation drills.

* Maintain bus or transportation vehicle in a clean and orderly condition, and inspect and report any mechanical defects of malfunctions.

* Adhere to policies and procedures in maintaining appropriate student behavior.

* Respond to public contacts concerning transportation problems and concerns.

* Complete the daily transportation activity record, including number of students transported, mileage, type of trip, and standby time.

* Sweep, clean, and refuel buses.

* May transport children with special learning needs and physical handicaps.

* Administer first aid as required and contact appropriate administrators in the event of serious injury or illness.

QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: * principles, methods and techniques for training bus drivers.

* safe driving practices and techniques; * provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code, the Education Code, and Title 13 applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children, the training of school bus drivers, and the Commercial Driver's Handbook; * basic first aid procedures and methods; * safety and maintenance requirements for buses and other pupil transportation equipment.

Ability to: * Drive and teach others to drive safely and efficiently all the vehicles in the transportation fleet; * Interview, counsel, and assist other drivers; * Operate a computer and other basic office equipment; * Express oneself orally and in writing; * Maintain accurate and comprehensive records and prepare clear and concise reports; * Maintain appropriate student behavior on a school bus or other transportation equipment; * Perform appropriately in situations requiring tact and diplomacy; * Understand and carry out oral and written directions; * Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education, Training, and Experience: * Completion of twelfth grade or equivalent; * Five years of experience in the transportation of school children free from citations for motor vehicle code violations, and one year of involvement in a driver-training program.

License Required: * Possession of a valid Class B, California Motor Vehicle Operator's License; * Possession of a School Bus Driver's Certificate issued by the California Highway Patrol; * Possession of an unrestricted State Department of Education Driver Instructor Certificate; * Possession of a current American Red Cross First Aid Certificate.

Condition of Employment * Insurability by the District's liability insurance carrier; * Pre-employment drug testing (DOT); * Random drug test.
