This position is funded through either department funds or Federal Work Study (FWS) funds. Students who are not eligible for FWS are still encouraged to apply, as department funding may be available.

Hours: 2-4 hours per week

Position Duration: Academic Year

PURPOSE OF JOB:

The purpose of this position is to lead and instruct basic group fitness classes. The group fitness instructor is responsible for designing aerobic programs to meet the needs and abilities of participants by developing and instructing proper routines, muscle sequences, and exercise techniques. The group fitness instructor is responsible for enforcing Elmen Center facility policies, maintaining equipment, ensuring the safety of participants through basic aerobic routine development, and promoting the Recreational Services department, programs, and Mission.

SPECIAL SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS, and TRAINING REQUIRED FOR JOB:

The group fitness instructor must posses strong people skills, conflict resolution skills, enthusiasm, and assertiveness. Other specific skills that would be beneficial include an understanding of exercise and fitness program principles, knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, and an understanding of various pieces of group fitness equipment. Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications are preferred.

SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administrative:

The group fitness instructor will be expected to:

Attend training sessions, bi-monthly instructor meetings, and other meetings as needed and indicated by the Director of Recreational Services.

Be accountable for assigned aerobic classes, approving substitutions with the recreation coordinator or team leader.

Arrive at least 15 minutes early for assigned aerobic class. Be prepared to stay until all necessary job responsibilities are completed at the end of shift.

Accurately and thoroughly complete the appropriate aerobic instructor checklists during each shift.

Adhere to and enforce all Elmen Center facility policies.

Emergency:

The group fitness instructor will be aware of all emergency procedures for the recreation facility and be prepared to:

Observe regular fire and tornado procedures, including evacuating the building or directing people to the appropriate location inside the building.

Respond to, and manage appropriately according to the emergency plan, any injury, rescue situation, and/or blood spill.

Know emergency numbers and immediately make use of these numbers when emergency situations arise (Campus Safety #4014, Police/Fire #9-911).

Notify the Director of Recreational Services and Building Supervisor of unusual circumstances which may involve the Physical Plant, such as heat, air conditioning, plumbing, lights, pool problems, and power surges.

Security:

The group fitness instructor will:

Be sure all group fitness participants have safely completed the class and exited the class setting.

Collect an ID card from each patron attending class and verify the ID to ensure safety and monitor class number according to department policy.

Ensure that equipment is kept in good condition according to department policy.

Properly shut-down, return, and lock sound equipment to the designated spot.

Remind and expect participants to sign-in on the liability form before participating in class.

Supervisory/Leadership:

The group fitness instructor will adhere to the following guidelines:

Promote Recreational Services programs and facilities.

Motivate and encourage group fitness participants throughout the entire class format; instructing in an enthusiastic, energetic, and passionate manner.

Maintain a safe environment for all group fitness participants.

Create a positive fitness atmosphere/environment that enhances wow experiences.

Passionate about their purpose and role as a group fitness instructor, and display a servant heart.

Create a high-energy, inspiring, and motivating environment.

Protocol

The group fitness instructor will adhere to the following guidelines:

Wear appropriate fitness attire-t-shirt/tank top, tennis shoes, no jeans or constricting clothing.

Do not make or receive personal phone calls while instructing class.

Does not study while on duty.

Maintain a professionalism that adheres to the Recreational Services department Mission and Values.

Relationship with Student Employment Supervisor (who student will report to):

The group fitness instructor will report to the Building Supervisor, Aerobics Team Leader, Recreation Coordinators, and the Director of Recreational Services.

Miscellaneous:

The group fitness instructor will follow the specific position job responsibilities as outlined in the aerobics manual.

Method of Evaluation:

The group fitness instructor will be evaluated on a formal basis 1 to 2 times each year by the recreation coordinator. This evaluation will involve a written evaluation by the recreation coordinator, as well as a self-evaluation filled out by the group fitness instructor. The group fitness instructor will be periodically evaluated by the Building Supervisor and their respective Team Leader. This will include a written evaluation by the Building Supervisor or Team Leader, and will be covered verbally.
