The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is the oldest school for the deaf, founded in 1817 by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. The American School for the Deaf is committed to serving deaf and hard of hearing infants, youth, and their families in development of intellect and the enhancement of quality of life utilizing specially designed instruction through an American Sign Language and English Bilingual Approach, empowering them to become educated and self-directed life-long learners.
ASD is located in West Hartford, a town recognized as one of the top ten towns for raising families. West Hartford residents value education, evidenced by the high quality of public and private schools. There is also much to do in West Hartford. There is a wide array of parks and recreation. There are pools and hiking trails. There are historic sites to visit as well. If shopping is on the list, then Blue Back Square, located in the center of town, offers many retail stores and a variety of restaurants to satisfy everyone.

Description: Full time - 12 Months Benefits Eligible
Union Status: Non-Collective Bargaining (non-union)
Work Schedule: Sunday, 8:00am - 10:00pm
Monday, 5:00pm - 11:00pm
Friday, 2:00pm - 11:00pm
Saturday, 4:00pm - 10:00pm
SCOPE OF DUTIES
Under the supervision of the Security Co-Chiefs or their designee, will conduct continual tours throughout the grounds and buildings to ensure overall security of the campus.
PRIMARY DUTIES
Monitor cameras and fire alarms.
Perform fire drills and lockdown drills as required.
Perform monthly checks of other devices to include, but not limited to, emergency lighting, exterior lighting. Report any deficiencies via email to the Assistant Director of Operations and the Security Chief. Submit SchoolDude to Plant Operations.
Handle transport needs of staff and students requiring medical assistance to the SHC.
Assist staff and/or students during emergencies.
Provide written reports of any unusual activities using the Daily Activity Report and, when necessary, the Incident Report.
Monitor areas in buildings or outside when used by staff or particularly outside organizations. Secure building areas when events are finished and the area is vacated.
Report through emails and/or SchoolDudes all exit, stairway and exterior lights in need of repair.
Report any unusual conditions such as loss of power, heat, telephone, fire alarms, etc. to the Director of Plant Operations or his assistant immediately. Also, notify the Assistant Director of Operations.
Responsible for covering weekend and holiday shifts. Should also be willing to accept other shifts as needed (i.e. coverage for vacation/sick leave time, etc.).
Willingness to work overtime as needed.
Perform monthly equipment checks as directed by the Security Co-Chiefs.
Other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Maturity of judgment and an ability to act with tact and restraint while utilizing conflict resolution techniques.
Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks.
Practices discretion and maintains strict confidentiality.
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to work in a collaborative setting.
Must possess High School Diploma, or equivalent.
Must possess a valid state driver's license.
Must possess a valid State of Connecticut Security Guard Certification (i.e. Guard Card).
Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
American Sign Language proficiency strongly preferred or commitment to learn.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Non-Exempt, 12-month position.

$1000 sign-on bonus after one year of service (only brand-new hires eligible; rehired employees not eligible for sign-on bonus) .
