Essex Industries is a multi-site aerospace and defense manufacturer serving military and commercial customers worldwide. The Quality Machinist is responsible for operating precision CNC and/or manual machines while performing in-process and final inspections to ensure parts meet print and quality standards. This dual-role position bridges machining and quality control to maintain consistent, high-accuracy production and reduce scrap or rework.
Key Responsibilities
Set up and operate CNC and/or manual machines according to setup sheets and part drawings.
Perform first-piece, in-process, and final inspections using precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, CMM, etc.).
Interpret blueprints, GD&T, and engineering specifications to verify part conformance.
Record inspection results and maintain documentation for traceability.
Help reduce rework and scrap caused in the machine shop by catching machining defects and quality issues at the setup operation.
Work closely with programmers and engineers to resolve dimensional or tolerance problems.
Maintain equipment, gauges, and tools in proper working condition.
Support continuous improvement, 5S, and lean manufacturing initiatives.
Train or mentor other machinists in quality and inspection best practices.
Ensure adherence to AS9100 and internal quality procedures. Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent; technical training preferred.
3-5 years of experience in precision machining and inspection.
Strong understanding of GD&T and blueprint reading.
Proficient in use of inspection tools and equipment.
Experience with CMM or digital inspection systems a plus.
Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and meet production deadlines.
Commitment to quality, accuracy, and continuous improvement. Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
Frequent use of hands, precision tools, and measuring equipment.
