Role Overview

An established transportation and infrastructure engineering group in Herndon, Virginia is expanding its structural practice and is seeking a senior bridge professional to lead complex design initiatives. This role carries full responsibility for technical delivery, project performance, and client coordination across public-sector transportation programs.

Core Responsibilities

Lead bridge and structural design projects from planning through construction support

Manage scope, schedule, budget, and staffing to meet contractual and performance requirements

Direct engineers and designers in the production of complete, high-quality construction documents

Act as technical lead, providing structural engineering expertise across all project phases

Mentor and develop team members through regular one-on-one meetings and structured project reviews

Coordinate with internal disciplines and subconsultants to define risk-aware scopes and fees

Prepare and maintain project management plans, quality plans, and detailed schedules

Identify, engage, and manage subconsultants and specialty partners

Monitor project progress, manage risks, and administer changes through extra work authorizations and task proposals

Communicate project status, financials, and issues to clients and internal leadership

Prepare progress reports, review invoices, and lead client-facing status meetings

Support business development efforts, including go or no-go decisions, proposal development, and interviews

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with a structural focus from an ABET-accredited program

Ten or more years of bridge and structural design experience

Active Professional Engineer license in the Commonwealth of Virginia

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Ability to present technical information clearly to technical and non-technical audiences

Preferred Background

Experience delivering projects for the Virginia Department of Transportation and Virginia local agencies

Familiarity with Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, and public-private partnership delivery models

Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams

Work Setting

Office-based work with periodic field assignments

Field work may involve exposure to varying weather conditions

Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds may be required
