This role will work a hybrid schedule coming into the Columbus, Ohio office 2 days per week on Wednesdays & Thursdays.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Specialist, Software Engineer to execute on the technical strategy and deliver within our Annuity Modernization team within Nationwide Financial, focusing on Workflow. This role drives architectural decisions forward and ensures scalable, secure, and innovative solutions that transform how we ingest, process, and route documents across multiple channels - enabling seamless, automated, and intelligent workflows that support both New Business and Post-Issue transactions.

You’ll work in a cross functional product-centric agile team, closely partnering with a Product Owner and fellow engineers to deliver high-impact capabilities. This is a great opportunity to contribute to a modern, event-driven architecture while building scalable, cloud-native solutions that integrate with enterprise systems.

What You’ll Do

Guide, optimize, and implement solutions for:

Multi-Channel Ingestion (paper, email, fax, web, eB2B) with OCR/ICR data extraction (Optical Character Recognition and Intelligent Character Resolution)

Metadata Frameworks and APIs for document enrichment

Task Management and intelligent Routing based on business rules

Integrated Workflows with multiple upstream and downstream systems

Modern File Cabinet & Viewer for document access and retrieval

Automation & Orchestration of end-to-end business processes

Event-Driven Architecture for downstream system integration

Reporting & Optimization dashboards and analytics

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and continuous delivery

Influence product strategy by aligning technical solutions with business objectives

Mentor engineers and foster technical excellence across the team

Define technical standards and best practices

Contribute to a culture of innovation, learning, and psychological safety

As a Software Engineer, you will focus primarily on providing high quality, efficient technology solutions to business partners by crafting new software applications or modifying and/or supporting existing packaged or custom-built applications. In this capacity, you’ll analyze, code, configure, test, debug, document and maintain applications.

Key Responsibilities:

Analyzes, solutions, develops, tests, debugs, documents and deploys software according to standards in an agile environment.

Applies secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure our data and technology solutions are protected from threats and vulnerabilities.

Uses DevSecOps practices, tooling and techniques.

Drives continuous improvement and learning through ongoing training, practice and innovation.

Manages medium to large project priorities, deadlines and deliverables proactively.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to a Technology Manager/Director.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Completion of undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, or other related degree. Technology experience or non-traditional technology certificates can be substituted for an undergraduate degree.

Experience: Four or more years of analysis and technology experience.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Proficiency in one or more programming language such as Java, C++, Python, JavaScript. Strong knowledge of software development lifecycle. Proven ability to tackle complex business and development problems. Ability to thrive in a team environment. Insurance/financial services industry knowledge a plus.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and Human Resources Business Partner.
