The Ohio Department of Taxation is responsible for the administration of individual and business taxes across the state. The Ohio Department of Taxation is seeking multiple College Interns to work in our Audit Division.

What You’ll do as an Intern in Audit

As an intern with our department, you will gain hands on experience working with taxation professionals in a number of areas. This position will allow you to connect your classroom knowledge with real-world experience by performing work expected of a full-time, entry-level employee. We look forward to working with you to determine where you would best fit in our department.

Other key duties include:

Plans and conducts audits and refund investigations for Sales and Use Tax, Employer Withholding Tax, Motorcraft (aircraft, watercraft, vehicle) taxes, and/or International Fuel Tax Agreement.

Conduct office reviews of taxpayer returns, invoices, receipts, ledgers, etc.

Conduct pre-audit analysis with lead auditors and/or manager to determine scope, methodology, sample type and period.

Draft audit remarks to support audit findings and/or refund recommendations.

Provide education of Ohio tax law during the audit to promote current and future compliance.

Learn to read and interpret section Title 57 (Taxation) of the Ohio Revised Code and Chapter 5703 of the Ohio Administrative Code.

Apply both codes to decision making within the audit on taxability, interest, penalty, etc.

Collaborate with management and peers on new audit ideas or special projects, leveraging data sets and new technology to enhance the Audit Division.

Other responsibilities include: problem-solving tax issues, assisting veteran auditors in their audits and/or field assignments, traveling to taxpayer’s facilities to understand their operations, and working on various special projects both individually and in a group of your peers.
