POSITION DESCRIPTION
Title: Bus Mechanic
Reports To: Supervisor of Mechanics
FLSA Status: Nonexempt
Summary: To repair, overhaul and inspect school buses, trucks and other automotive vehicles
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Examines vehicles and discusses with Garage Supervisor nature and extent of damage of malfunction
2. Plans work procedure, using charts, technical manuals and experience
3. Raises vehicles, using hydraulic jack or hoist, to gain access to mechanical units bolted to underside of vehicles
4. Removes unit, such as engine, transmission or differential, using wrenches, portable airhoist and transmission jack
5. Disassembles unit and inspect parts for wear
6. Replaces parts, such as pistons, rods, gears, valves and bearings using mechanic's hand tools and all necessary precautions
7. Rewires ignition system, lights and instrument panel
8. Relines and adjusts brakes, aligns front end and repairs or replaces shock absorbers
9. Mends damaged body and fenders by hammering out or filling in dents and welding broken parts
10. Replaces and adjusts headlights, installs and repairs accessories such as heaters, mirrors and windshield wipers
11. Makes minor repairs to county vehicles such as replacing spark plugs, batteries, lightbulbs and connecting loose wires
12. Removal and replacing school bus tires
13. Maintains a clean and safe work area
14. Observes and promotes safe work practices and procedures

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
1. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school diploma
2. Evidence of prior successful experience in vehicle maintenance
3. Must have basic skills and knowledge of computer program applications
4. Must possess a valid Virginia Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake, School Bus, Passenger Bus and Combination Vehicle Endorsement

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Twelve-month employment. Salary to be determined by the School Board.
EVALUATION
Performance of the position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Prince Edward County School Board's policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
