General Description
The purpose of this class within the organization is to assists in the fabrication, installation, maintenance and repair of street directional signs for use throughout the City; assists with installation of traffic markers, island and other traffic control structures. Performs related maintenance work as required. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent. Requires four years maintenance experience or closely related experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and current DOT Medical Card required, forklift training, traffic control training, etc.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment utilized in the area of assigned work.
Working knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned area of work.
Knowledge of asphalt marking and sign fabrication.
Knowledge of practices and procedures of traffic control including proper placement of cones, barricades and warning devices.
Ability to perform a variety of maintenance, construction, and repair work of streets, gutters, sidewalks, storm drains and related facilities.
Ability to perform a variety of tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions
Ability to operate a variety of maintenance equipment and tools including heavy and light power-driven equipment and hand tools in a safe and effective manner.
Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.
Essential Job Functions:
Operates hand and machine tools in repairing and maintaining City streets.
Fabricates signs to replace damaged, missing, or worn-out signs; updates pavement markings on city streets.
Supplies and sets-up signs and barricades for shutdowns for city special events; aids in emergency shutdowns and flagging.
Operates striping machine to paint divided lines, stop bars, and turn arrows, etc. on City streets.
Lays, pours, and finishes curbs, gutters, and sidewalks; builds forms; lays brick and blocks.
Receives and reviews work orders.
Maintains accurate records of work completed.
Performs vehicle inspections before starting a route and after it is completed and turns in the inspection sheets to the supervisor.
Performs routine and emergency repairs and maintenance, both scheduled and in response to emergency situations, as required.
Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.
