Description

This seasonal position is responsible for assisting the Engineering Department with a variety of tasks relating to the construction oversight of street and utility rehabilitation projects, as well as the collection of data for city assets within GIS, such as street ratings, pedestrian facility inspections, and stormwater inspections.

This is a full-time, 40-hour-a-week internship.

The anticipated internship period is Monday, May 25, through Friday, August 28, 2026; both dates are flexible.

Examples of Duties

Assist staff with construction oversight of City street, sanitary sewer, water main, and storm sewer rehabilitation projects with emphasis on the following duties:

Assist with daily documentation and photos of construction activities.

Serve as the connection between contractors and senior engineering staff to answer questions that arise during construction.

Monitor that contractors are following city standards and specifications and inform senior staff of activity that appears inconsistent with these guidelines

Collect field data of various city infrastructure assets such as streets, pedestrian ramps, manholes, catch basins, and water system features utilizing GIS software.

Assist staff with distributing notices to affected property owners regarding upcoming construction activities.

Assist with inspections and data reporting for the City's MS4 Stormwater Permit and Program, including inspections of manholes, outfalls, ponds, and other stormwater facilities.

Regular attendance is required.

Work outside of normal hours (overtime) will be available, but ultimately not required of this position

Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as apparent or as delegated.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, a two-year Civil Engineering Technician degree, or a degree in a related field.

Valid driver's license and a good driving record.

Good verbal and written English communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous work experience in an engineering or construction-related position.

Experience with GIS or Surveying.

Experience with reading and interpreting construction plans.
