Job Description
As a Lab Technician at Vitrealab, you will play a central role in keeping our laboratory and fabrication environment running smoothly. You will work across a diverse set of tasks—from general lab maintenance and repairs to cleanroom assistance, equipment setup, workshop tasks, and technical procurement. Depending on your background and interests, the position can be part-time (focused on maintenance and technical support) or full-time (including additional responsibilities in waveguide fabrication and characterization).
Your responsibilities
General laboratory upkeep and organization
Routine lab maintenance, small repairs, and infrastructure improvements
Cleanroom-specific tasks such as assembly setup and lab cleaning
Communication with external partners and service providers
Tracking and managing of small scale chemical waste (Sondermüll)
Keeping Safety Data Sheets up-to-date
Operating and maintaining 3D printers
Technical purchasing and handling returns
Working with compressed-air systems
Managing lab supplies (gloves, tissues, chemicals, …)
Operating CNC equipment and performing workshop tasks (cutting, drilling, etc.)
Supporting upgrades to the lab, such as improving enclosures, fixing dryers, and expanding lab space
Monitoring environmental indicators (humidity, power warnings)
Additional support waveguide-related tasks
Polishing and sample preparation for coating
Wafer ungluing, annealing, and chip cleaving
Improving fabrication temperature stability
Simple waveguide chip characterization
Supporting waveguide wafer fabrication and scribing workflows
Cleaning and preparing wafers
Prerequisites
Mandatory:
Technical Bachelor’s degree or strong vocational training preferred
Good German language skills
Good English proficiency
Strong hands-on mentality and willingness to work with technical equipment
Enjoys communicating with external companies, suppliers, and service partners
Curiosity and willingness to learn new tools, machines, and workflows
Nice to have:
Experience with technical machinery, lab equipment, PCs, or workshop tools
Experience in a cleanroom or laboratory environment
Basic understanding of fabrication tools, 3D printing, CNC machines, or electronics
Ability to work independently and solve problems in a dynamic setting
