The Township is seeking a detail-oriented and professional Housing Inspector/Code Enforcement Officer to help maintain safe, healthy, and code-compliant residential properties within the community. This position plays a vital role in protecting neighborhood standards by conducting residential and rental inspections, responding to code complaints, and ensuring compliance with township ordinances and the International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC). The successful candidate will possess strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple cases in a fast-paced, public-facing environment.
Essential Functions & Duties
Enforce township ordinances and the International Property Maintenance Code
Inspect residential properties at time of use and occupancy transfer
Inspect rental properties at time of tenant transfer
Respond to citizen complaints regarding potential code violations
Conduct inspections and investigations to determine code compliance
Prepare inspection documentation, case summaries, and written reports
Issue violation notices and ensure timely resolution of complaints
Prepare citations for unresolved violations and testify in court as required
Maintain accurate inspection logs and records
Communicate effectively with residents, elected officials, and township staff
Perform data entry and recordkeeping in electronic systems
Work collaboratively with other inspectors and department staff
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Community Development or designee
Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent required
Valid driver's license required
Current ICC Property Maintenance Code Certification, or ability to successfully obtain certification within three (3) months of hire
Working knowledge of state and local housing codes
Ability to understand, interpret, and apply laws, ordinances, and regulations
Strong verbal and written communication skills for documenting findings and case preparation
Professional demeanor when interacting with the public and team members
Ability to receive feedback and participate in ongoing training
Ability to work under adverse and sometimes hostile conditions
Strong commitment to confidentiality
Ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions
Technical & Computer Skills
Proficiency with electronic office equipment (copier, scanner, telephone)
Skilled in personal computer use, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
Ability to learn permitting and inspection software systems
Work Environment
This position involves both office work and field inspections and may require working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Situations may occasionally involve contentious or difficult interactions with property owners or tenants.
