Job Title: Certified Medical Coder (Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Specialty)
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Certified Medical Coder with specialized expertise in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) services. The ideal candidate will possess advanced knowledge of coding guidelines for complex hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and gastrointestinal surgical and procedural cases. This role ensures accurate coding, proper reimbursement, and compliance with federal, state, and payer-specific regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Review and analyze HPB clinical documentation—including operative reports, imaging, pathology, and clinic encounters—to assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes.
Apply in-depth knowledge of HPB anatomy, disease processes, and procedural terminology for high-complexity cases such as:
Liver resections and transplant-related procedures
Pancreatic surgeries (e.g., Whipple procedures)
Biliary reconstruction, stenting, and endoscopic interventions
Minimally invasive and robotic HPB procedures
Ensure compliance with AAPC, AHIMA, CMS, and payer-specific coding guidelines.
Work closely with HPB surgeons, APPs, billing staff, and clinical teams to clarify documentation and resolve coding discrepancies.
Conduct internal audits to validate coding accuracy and identify educational needs.
Maintain productivity and quality benchmarks as defined by departmental standards.
Stay current on updates to coding rules, payer policies, and HPB clinical best practices.
Qualifications
Required Certifications:
AAPC: CPC, CIC, or COC or AHIMA: CCS, CCS-P
Experience:
Minimum 2–3 years of medical coding experience, with at least 1 year of dedicated Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary or complex surgical coding.
Strong understanding of HPB anatomy, surgical techniques, and terminology.
Proficiency with EMR systems and encoder software (e.g., Epic, 3M, Optum).
Excellent attention to detail, analytical skills, and ability to work independently.
Strong communication skills for provider queries and interdisciplinary collaboration.
