POSITION SUMMARY:

Under Occasional Supervision, assists in supervising the daily operations of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department ensuring prompt response to 911 calls and the provision of qualified medical treatment and transportation. Immediate Supervisor of Shift Personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Supervises Shift Personnel – EMT’s, AEMTS, and Paramedics on assigned shift.

Supervisory duties included scheduling, instructing, assigning, reviewing, and planning work of others.

Maintaining standards, coordinating activities, allocating personnel, acting on employee issues, and recommending employee disciplinary action as appropriate.

Reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy.

Counsels shift personnel on job performance and behavioral issues.

Evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate.

Offers on-the-job training, and advice and assistance as needed.

Maintenance of staffing requirements for each shift; for all supplies required for each shift; and for truck inventory per shift.

Provides E911 personnel with up-to-date shift duty roster.

Completes required records and forms documenting patient treatment.

Collects, reviews, and submits reports prepared by subordinates. Ensures that reports are accurate and properly completed.

Responds to emergency calls where necessary, providing basic and advanced life support treatment to patients, as well as transportation to appropriate medial facility. Assesses the condition of patients and makes decisions regarding proper courses of action. Performs such duties as CPR, cardia monitoring, medication calculation and administration, splint application, wound treatment, control of bleeding, monitoring, and relaying of vital signs, oxygen and IV therapy administration, sterile suctioning, intubation, gastric lavage, defibrillation. ECG monitoring, and the management of cardiac arrest and severe trauma patients. Performs extrication of victims from wreckage as necessary. Determines need for back-up or assistance from additional medical or rescue personnel.

Fills in as an ambulance crew member when necessary.

Backs up ambulance crews in QRV when necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and Experience:

Requires High School Diploma and Paramedic Certifications supplemented by (5) years of EMS experience. Must have previous experience working with the public and/or employees. Public sector experience is a plus.

Required Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of:

Principles, practices, methods, and equipment of pre-hospital emergency medical care.

Confidentiality in a healthcare setting – HIPPA compliance.

DPH regulatory compliance.

Scheduling and staffing for Emergency Services.

Applicable laws, codes and regulations.

Computer applications related to the work.

Medical records management principles and practices.

Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Principles and techniques of making effective oral presentations.

Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Skill in:

Ensuring full staffing for essential day-to-day functions.

Provides interfacility transport of patients to out-of-town hospitals as needed in emergency and non-emergency situations.

Maintains working relationship with local hospitals.

Assists in cleaning, and disinfecting EMS units and performing general housekeeping of station and grounds.

Prepare and/or process shift reports, duty rosters, call-book, incident reports, disciplinary reports, log books for runs, memos, processing time sheets, etc.

Making effective oral presentations to large and small groups.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:

Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.

Certified Paramedic.

NIMS / ICS 100,200,700, 800, 300, 400

Driver’s license.
