Glossary: Key Terms in Customs House Brokerage

- ABI (Automated Broker Interface): The EDI channel brokers/importers use to transmit entries and entry summaries electronically into ACE and manage payments (e.g., ACH). Most U.S. import entries are filed via ABI.

- ACE (Automated Commercial Environment): CBP’s modern Single Window platform for trade processing (manifests, cargo release, post release, exports, and PGA data). Trade users access ACE via the ACE Secure Data Portal (web) or EDI.

- CBP (U.S. Customs and Border Protection): The federal agency within DHS that protects the U.S. borders and facilitates lawful trade and travel while enforcing customs and trade laws.

- CHB (Custom House Brokerage): The regulated service (and team) that files import entries, pays/arranges duties, classifies goods, and communicates with U.S. government agencies on behalf of importers.

- EDI (Electronic Data Interchange): The machine to machine messaging standard used to file entries, entry summaries, manifests, and supporting documents in ACE.
