Under the supervision of the Camp Manager, Recreation Supervisor, and Recreation Program Manager, Recreation Camp Counselors are responsible for the daily supervision and safety of recreation camp participants during activities in accordance with camp policies. This position is responsible for assisting with various activities at summer events for the community. This position works up to a maximum of 40 hours per week during the Twelve (12) weeks of summer camp. Camp placement is determined by camp managers and Recreation Supervisor based on camp needs.

Essential Functions of Work

(May not include all duties performed.)

Engage all participants in activities and provide meaningful interactions while acting as a positive role model.

Ensure safety of the participants during the weeks of scheduled camps.

Assist with general operation and maintenance of facilities and grounds to ensure a safe and secure place.

Follow department policy as to matters of discipline, communicable disease management and medical or other emergencies.

Assist in the preparation, implementation and clean-up of daily activities.

Teach or lead specific programs, games and activities.

Demonstrate enthusiasm and positive energy.

Maintain good communication with parents and the community.

Perform other related duties as assigned by the Recreation Coordinators, Recreation Supervisors, Recreation Program Managers, Deputy Director of Recreation and Parks, or the Director of Recreation and Parks or their designee.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Considerable knowledge of principles and techniques of planning, organizing, and conducting recreational activities.

Considerable knowledge of various recreational programs and current trends in the industry.

Good verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to supervise, direct, instruct, and solicit cooperation from others in the performance of their daily work assignments and duties.

Ability to compile and prepare reports and maintain accurate records.

Ability to exercise independent judgement, discretion and to provide leadership.

Ability to answer inquiries, resolve complaints, and communicate with the public in an effective, tactful courteous, and professional manner.

Ability to implement Emergency Action Plans and emergency response plans.

Compliance with training directives established by supervisory and management personnel.

Adherence to all applicable federal, state and local safety laws, rules and regulations and City policies/procedures.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Possession of or ability to obtain American Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification (employer provides).

A background free of prior felony convictions.

Regular and punctual attendance is regarded as an essential requirement of this position.

Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays.

Physical Requirements:

Must be physically capable of successfully performing the essential job functions of the job classification with or without reasonable accommodation and be free of medical conditions that would preclude one from successfully performing said functions or that would pose a direct threat to the health or safety of oneself or others.

Must be physically capable of sitting, standing, reaching, twisting, bending, walking, lifting and kneeling, grasping, and repetitive motions to perform the essential job functions.

Must be able to verbally communicate for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.

Must maintain visual acuity and hearing necessary for observing general surrounding and activities.

The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

Must possess the physical ability to remain outdoors for a sustained period throughout the course of the summer.

RETIREMENT PENSION

The City contributes 14% monthly toward retirement benefits offered through the Ohio Retirement System (OPERS) and the employee contributes 10%.
