Description:

We're seeking a senior, hands-on DevOps leader (6-10 years of experience) who can quickly assess our client's current state, set clear direction, and execute alongside the team, while leveling up DevOps capabilities and removing operational burden from Engineering. We need a DevOps leader who owns deployment clarity, not gatekeeps it, someone who brings structure, transparency, and shared understanding to how we build, deploy, and operate our systems.

The Role:

This person has operated at both a strategic and execution level in a small to mid-sized company and is trusted to set technical direction, make platform and infrastructure decisions, and guide the team on what to do and why

This is a hands-on lead or manager role, working directly with one (and potentially two) DevOps engineers, and partnering closely with the Engineering Manager. The goal is to remove operational burden from Engineering while improving clarity, reliability, and scalability across our systems.

This role leads by doing, not just directing. What You'll Actually Do

Ownership & Execution

Own and execute the deployment process end-to-end, making it repeatable, teachable, and transparent, while executing deployments, troubleshooting, and on-call rotation

Own day-to-day DevOps operations, including infrastructure management, monitoring, logging, autoscaling, security posture, patching, and maintenance to ensure systems are reliable and well understood Assessment & Strategy

Audit the current state: identify what is truly opaque vs. what just feels risky

Define a practical, scalable DevOps strategy

Establish clear patterns so new projects follow known paths Modernization & Scalability

Work with existing team and contractor to turn vision into execution

Improve CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation with clear failure signals, diagnostics, and recovery paths when automation breaks

Own and guide future scalability of infrastructure, databases, and system architecture

Help modularize Traverse by understanding how components fit together and what that requires Teaching & Enablement

Pair with developers during deployments to build shared understanding and confidence

Help engineers understand how to modify deployments, not just run them

Document with developers in mind, explaining both how and why

Build a culture where DevOps knowledge is shared, not siloed What Success Looks Like

In the First 30 Days

Deliver a documented assessment of the current DevOps state

Produce and own a clear, prioritized DevOps roadmap for the first six months

Start hands-on execution with the team against that strategy In the First 6 months

Deliver reliable, documented, and repeatable deployment processes

Enable two additional engineers to independently execute and modify deployments

Normalize on-call operations with predictable, supportable coverage

Ensure failures are diagnosable with clear root-cause visibility

Transition DevOps knowledge from individual-dependent to standardized and shared Who Will Succeed in This Role

You are someone who:

Is deeply hands-on but thinks strategically

Can confidently say "here's what we should do, and here's why"

Enjoys teaching and raising the technical confidence of others

Has operated in environments where structure needed to be built, not inherited

Values clarity, ownership, and practical solutions over complexity Education & Experience Requirements

Advanced programming experience (Python, Go, Ruby, etc.)

Proficiency with Linux/Unix administration, scripting, and programming (bash, Python, Ruby, etc.)

Deep expertise with core DevOps technologies such as Docker, Terraform, Ansible, and CloudFormation

Advanced proficiency with configuration management tools (Ansible, Chef, Puppet, etc.)

Strong experience with database administration

Strong troubleshooting and monitoring skills for Linux operating systems

Hands-on experience implementing monitoring and log aggregation platforms (ELK, Graylog, Graphite, Prometheus, etc.)

Experience automating the provisioning, deployment, and scaling of resources and applications using CI/CD workflows

Experience with testing automation tools and frameworks

Experience deploying and managing web and application servers, load balancers, queues, and caches; proven ability to scale and build resiliency into web application architectures. Experience deploying a 12 Factor App is a plus

Proficiency with source control systems and IaC to create scriptable, repeatable processes

AWS experience is a plus, as well as familiarity with EC2, S3, Route53, VPC, IAM, and EKS

Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
