SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES:

The primary role of a radiology technologist (also called an x-ray technologist or technician) is using medical imaging equipment to produce images of tissues, organs, bones, and vessels.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Must maintain patient-first focus at all times and exhibit outstanding customer service skills as outlined by Complete Health's Mission.

Produce x-ray films (radiographs) of parts of the human body for use in diagnosing medical problems as requested by providers.

Obtains patient history, explains procedures to patient and addresses patients' concerns, and follows established pre-screening policy and procedure such as asking to remove items such as jewelry and other articles through which x-rays cannot pass.

Surrounds the exposed area with radiation protection devices, such as lead shields or limit the size of the x-ray beam to prevent unnecessary exposure to radiation.

Positions radiographic equipment at the correct angle and height over the appropriate area of a patient's body. Using instruments similar to a measuring tape, measures the thickness of the section to be radiographed and set controls on the x-ray machine to produce radiographs of the appropriate density, detail, and contrast.

Monitors the patient's physical condition during the course of the procedure; report patient change of status or emergency situations to clinical staff, supervisor and/or physician.

Provides images, data analysis, and patient information to the physician and/or radiologist for diagnostic interpretation.

Prepares facilities in accordance with procedural requirements; calibrates equipment as required by the institution. Troubleshoot equipment and document errors or equipment malfunctions; escalate issues and concerns to supervisor, Director of Clinical Services, Facilities Manager and/or Chief Operations Officer.

Must monitor EMR for orders as well as patients waiting in the hallway around immediate area that have paper orders from outside locations requesting X-rays.

Make surge signage is posted all times for women of child-bearing age warning.

Must perform the X-rays at ordered. Must call and ask provider/staff if there are any questions about an order or additional views or X-rays the patient might request.

Must make an educated decision as to the quality of the overall image produced from the X-ray taken. Must not release images that are not adequate. Ensure that EMR documentation is accurate so the images cross over (i.e. spelling of provider names)

Maintain patient flow, notifying management immediately when assistance is needed to process patients safely and efficiently.

Keep area neat and clean at all times, notifying management immediately of any housekeeping issues.

Checks with each provider prior to leaving each day. Must not leave the building until verbally released by each provider still seeing patients unless an approved replacement Technologist is onsite and working.

Responsible for performing tasks that are within the scope of his/her educational preparation and certification, knowledge, and permitted by the policies and procedures of Complete Health, and other local, state, and federal guidelines; and the policies of the facility requesting the services.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

High-school diploma required.

Associates Degree in Radiology or graduate of an accredited program of Radiology preferred.

Registered with American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) preferred

Non-restricted licensure in the State of Alabama; BLS certification preferred

or

three years experience in a clinical setting performing x-ray studies on digital x-ray equipment

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Physical stamina is important in this occupation as Radiology Technologist will be on their feet for long periods and may lift or turn disabled patients. Technologist/Technicians work at diagnostic machines but also may perform some procedures at other locations. Although radiation hazards exist in this occupation, they are minimized by the use of lead aprons, gloves, and other shielding devices, and by instruments monitoring exposure to radiation. Technologist/Technicians wear badges measuring radiation levels in the radiation area, and detailed records are kept on their cumulative lifetime dose.

Radiology Technologist/Technicians should be sensitive to patients' physical and psychological needs. They must pay attention to detail, follow instructions, and work as part of a team. In addition, operating complicated equipment requires mechanical ability and manual dexterity.
