Controller

Location: Coon Rapids, Minnesota

Search Conducted By: Pathway Talent Partners

$120,000-$140,000

Position Overview

Pathway Talent Partners is partnering with a privately held, multi-generation transportation company to identify an accomplished Controller to lead the organization's financial, administrative, and operational functions.

This is a pivotal, hands-on leadership opportunity for an executive who can modernize systems, strengthen processes, and align financial strategy with day-to-day fleet and field operations. The ideal candidate will bring a balance of strategic financial leadership and practical operational execution, enabling scalable infrastructure, improved reporting, and stronger communication across departments.

This role is best suited for a decisive, people-centric leader who thrives in a fast-paced, family-owned environment-someone who values integrity, efficiency, and quality, and who is comfortable rolling up their sleeves to support long-term growth rather than operating within a rigid corporate bureaucracy.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations for a multi-entity, multi-state transportation business

Manage and produce monthly and quarterly financial statements, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and consistency

Lead and streamline billing, invoicing, and documentation processes, including time & materials, labor, and equipment billing under master service agreements

Partner closely with an external accounting firm, supporting documentation, reconciliations, and review processes

Identify and resolve discrepancies

Supervise and support the accounting team, including Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable, while collaborating closely with administrative leadership

Ensure compliance with multi-state tax filings, reporting requirements, and industry-specific regulations

Improve reporting, processes, and controls to support operational clarity and planned growth

Serve as a trusted financial partner to leadership, balancing hands-on execution with thoughtful process improvement Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent practical experience)

7+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within services, transportation, logistics, construction, or rail-related industries

Prior experience at the Accounting Manager or Controller level

Strong working knowledge of Sage / Peachtree or similar ERP systems

Proven experience preparing monthly and quarterly financials

Experience working with external CPA firms and auditors

Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor small accounting teams

Familiarity with time & materials billing, service contracts, and invoicing under MSAs

Experience with multi-entity and multi-state accounting and tax compliance

Strong attention to detail with the ability to investigate and resolve variances

Comfortable in a hands-on, family-owned business environment

Practical, down-to-earth leadership style; collaborative, steady, and culturally aligned with a close-knit team
